There is so much debate about the LCD-2s. At first it was all positive. Now, it's a bit more "balanced". I have been wrestling with mine to play well for quite some time.As far as amps are concerned, both seem to require a lot of "current", although many report success with amps that don't have a reputation for being high current, such as the Leben CS300X. But hardly an amp has gone without mention on head-fi, as "the best" or workable with the LCD-2s.
In general, it would seem that you'd want an SS amp or hybrid with a JFET, or other discrete output stage. I am sure the Cavelli Liquid Fire would fill the bill. On the tube side, the Eddie Current ZDT has also received high marks.
The low price option seems to be the Schiit Lyr.
It's sort of a minefield out there.

The LCD2 is easy to drive. I used a Decware Taboo custom made with a headphone amp with good results. If you go to the HE6 I had best results from a speaker tap using a vintage Pioneer SX980 80W amp. The HE500 while more easier to drive still requires power and worked well on my Decware Taboo. I would not recommend the Hifiman unless you have the proper amps to drive them. For me I went back to the T1 and happier for it.
The newest version of the lcd2 does have better treble than the older version of a couple of months ago. When you listen to them, make sure you find out which version you are listening to because there are some slight differences that you may like one version over the other.
There does seem to be a lot of talk about the proper amps for the planar phones. Nothing will really substitute for listening, which I hope to do at RMAF, but background knowledge helps. Thanks.
When you audition the LCD-2, I recommend concentrating on the high frequencies. You will, no doubt, be impressed by the sub-bass response just as I was. IMHO, the highs are too rolled off and that is one of the main reasons I sold mine. The soundstage or headstage is a little strange as well. But, this is just my opinion. Listen carefully, if you can, at the meet. I would be interested in your impressions of the HE-6, if you have the chance to hear them.

Eddie Current and Woo will be there, I suspect, but not Cavelli, although there may be an "amateur" or two there showing off their private collections. This is generally allowed at headphones gatherings and was also at the first RMAF that featured headphones. Talk with these people, if they are there, as they terribly knowledgeable and have even more experience.
Have fun.
