Do you have anything in mind about what to use for the source and where you plan to listen (eg, always in your favorite chair, or sometimes in one room and sometimes in another)?
Depending on what your plans are, it might make a difference on closed vs open designs, size and portability, etc.

I only play vinyl and closed type would be best so as to not disturb anyone else in the room.

Maybe not quite as good looking as the AD700, but the ATH-M50's are very highly rated sealed headphones. In your price range, $159 at HeadRoom.
That leaves me about $150 for an amp. Is that enough?
If so, what should I look for?
Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

Slightly over your budget at $179, but I've heard that it is one of the truly outstanding budget hybrid tube/mosfet headphone amps on the market (and maybe the ONLY one in this price range that is designed and made in the USA instead of China). Fournier also makes other models, notably an all solid-state (mosfet) amp called the HSA-1, for about $50 less I think. Sold only on ebay, AFAIK.
...and the price is right.
I have found the M50's for $109, so I'd be on budget with that amp.

Make sure you read the in-depth review from Headfi (linked on the ebay ad). Very nice for the money.
