where I met a lot of individuals (and through them more) who had a profound influence on my knowledge of music and audio as a late teen.
Loaning demo models with a credit card imprint was common at the shop where I hung out (and late worked part time).
Or, you can do like Abe Collins who constantly churns gear and resells it.
Follow Ups:
Stereo Unlimited in San Diego not only remains open, over the years they offered great support to our local audio club. We also had meetings at other locations so as to not wear out our welcome. But they were our main base up until Covid impacted the meetings.
Like E-Stat I met many other hobbyists while shopping there for components or records, but even more at club meetings.

Chicago area stores like Victors and Audio Consultants were welcoming and generous with their time and knowledge.

Simon got me started many years ago with my first really good audio gear. I bought a lot of stuff from him over several decades and never had a quibble about any of the pricing or service. The only gripe I have about Simon's operation is that one of his salesmen birddogged a girlfriend from me in the 80s.
I spent countless hours at Audio Consultants in Evanston in 1967 when Simon was the owner and only person there. He truly was a consultant but repeated demos of AR, Altec, KLH or Advent or Jensen only brought me deeper down the audio rabbit hole and well, the rest is history as they say. I don't think Simon knew the kettle of fish he was getting himself into either at the time.
Bought my NAD 3020, Maggie SMGa and Dual CS 505 from Simon. There was a pizza place on Davis that was really good, but I don't recall the name.I still have the ProAcs that I bought from Rosone Audio in Skokie.

The pizza place was called, Gigio's. It was decent. Certainly more NY / NJ style than Chicago style.
Audio Consultants was great! When I was first getting into hi-fi in the late 80s / early 90s, they were definitely the spot.
I still have an Ayre CD player that Simon sold me, and my nephew has inherited my Genesis speakers, Sony SACD 777ES player, and Thorens 320 turntable - all from Audio Consultants. What a great place it was.
