Then you're lucky. I mostly heard systems which I had to compliment because the host was generous and wife pleasant, and food excellent. In my audacity I could have thought that having that kind of money I would assemble something infinitely better.. but maybe its all an illusion...
Follow Ups:
I didn't comment on his system because I was just buying something from him. But he demo'ed the turntable before I bought it.
Did it sound AWFUL. I bought it anyway and it sounds terrific in my system, thank the universal spirit.
I usually don't comment on other's system unless they ask me. I'm sure everyone has had their system not sound too good at one time or another.
I'm sure there were some aspects of his system that he really enjoyed that you didn't appreciate because the sound was too different from what you're used to. The guy you bought the TT from would probably think the same of your system, at least at first.
I've had experiences like that in other people's homes, and shows, and dealers.
I think part of being an audiophile is a tendency to focus on little things about our system. We overlook the big flaws because we get used to them, until another audiophile or dealer points them out. We all have different priorities too.
I would state it more simply: we all tend to get used to our systems. As for flaws, no doubt they exist in every system - but some flaws are no doubt bigger than others. ;-)
