Sunday morning I tried the razor blade sharpener. I spent Sunday afternoon in the ER. Came home two fingers lighter.

When my daughter was in high-school, she planned a science project to test whether a particular diet would change activity levels in rats but she had no budget and needed a way to measure activity.
We came up with a system in which each cage was on a springy resilient platform (foam rubber) so that it moved when the rat did. On top of each cage was a sheet of low grit sand paper and, from a shelf above the line of cages, plastic tone-arms with a crystal cartridges were placed with their styli on the sand paper. Movement in the cages caused movement of the styli and the output was recorded in cheap cumulative current monitors (looked liked mercury thermometers) for each cage/rat.
The arm/cartridges cost about $1each and the current recorders were about $2 each. And it worked!
I hope you don't mean you lost them
