He was not in the same league with, say, Oscar Peterson or Paul Smith or
Roger Kellaway or Dick Hyman or Hank Jones ...

as your list suggest.Although I'm QUITE certain Chick's name would be mentioned a time or two were such a discussion take place.

If he is saying his list is the greatest of all time, he left off many candidates. I have insufficient credentials to pick a greatest of all time, and really don't believe anyone does. I won't even go as far as saying that Mr. Corea belongs as a candidate because it is immaterial. That said, he was a remarkable pianist and composer with both popular and artistic appeal over nearly 5 decades. Anyone judging him merely by his fusion legacy is missing so much: early work with Getz and others, his avante garde period with Circle, work with Miles on early fusion efforts, RTF, duets with Burton and others, some great trio works (Corea/Vitous/Haynes & Corea/McBride/Blade - both collaborations were two of the best concerts I ever attended, several decades apart), his classical work, and Latin inspired work. Yes, his passing to the spirit world is a great loss.

he's pretty singular in that he wrote five 'jazz standards' and garnered 23 Grammy Awards out of 60 nominations ... there's nothing 'mere' about being a progenitor of jazz fusion while assembling some of the era's most premier virtuoso players into flagship ensembles of the genre either
as you have stated, that he was hired by several jazz luminaries of the 60's as an integral player to advance and evolve their musical concepts is certainly a stellar resume' just by itself
Corea earned any and all accolades for a body of work that was still in stride right up to his passing
RIP
Hi Cpwill, this is off topic, but I respectfully offer it as a big fan of Monk. You might want to correct your signature line. See this link -
In addition, I also consider Corea to be a major loss.

Thanks, and I know, This has been pointed out to me before, at least twice or more. So, I know Mull said it first, and Monk may or may not have ever said it. As a recovering architect (partially retired) and a volunteer jazz Programmer/Host/DJ for a community supported radio station in DC, it suits my purpose, so I continued to use it. As you will see below, you have convinced me to change it.

...I've read about between classical composers. Sometimes they did not like their contemporaries.
For example, Tchaikovsky did not admire Brahms. From his 10/9/1886 diary entry: "Played over the music of that scoundrel Brahms. What a giftless bastard! It irritates me that this self-conscious mediocrity should be recognized as a genius."
Or in a similar vein, Richard Strauss was not popular with some of his contemporaries. Cesar Cui said "His absurd cacophony will not be music in the thirtieth century" while Stravinsky described Strauss' opera "Der Rosenkavalier" as "cheap and poor."

so please tell us your qualifications to make this statement, or is it merely opinion and taste?
Did you play with your choices and Chick? Please tell
I think he has already established his DISqualification just by this one statement.

"It's taken me some time to process the loss of my dear friend Chick Corea. This is because of what he means to everybody else. What his status has become and how he's touched and shaped society. The world has changed, because there are so many smaller more personal worlds that have been affected. A pillar has fallen in the creative music universe.
I've known Chick for 52 years. We made ground breaking music with Miles Davis, then he asked me to be in his band some 4 years later. And that's when he gave me an opportunity to grow and define myself, along with Stanley, Billy and Al. But we were all defining ourselves and each other as we negotiated Chick's new musical vehicles. Communication was Chick's goal and I was learning how to do it on many different levels. Speaking, composing, musicianship combined with how to function as a Band in society. We became men, learning about each other through this musical journey created by Chick Corea. He became part of my family, and he invited me into his. His mom and dad were so encouraging and supportive. Endless enthusiasm, boundless inspiration are qualities those that have been fortunate to work with Chick get to experience. I was fortunate to take the seeds that Chick planted in me to grow my own gardens and invite Chick to bring his personal special plants to create unique, special collaborative musical gardens.
I thank you Chick Corea for giving me the opportunity to inspire friends that I never have met and to continue to inspire those that I have. You've left a musical legacy that is infinite. I'm happy to be a part of it. You are irreplaceable. Your spirit is what is will awaken us out of this sleep..."

Why - right after a guy who so many musicians and jazz fans worldwide consider to be a truly GREAT musician dies - you'd post to gratuitously say Chick was not on the level of your faves is beyond me. Not exactly a display of class.
He's been trolling here for some time now. I guess he's not taking getting old easy.
