Cell phones will also pick up key words. We did some tests at work in 2 different departments. Each department only had 3 or 4 personal cell phones laying around. Nor talking on rhem or anything.
One department discussed car parts/repairs. The other, cottage life and bears. Within a couple hours, ads were popping up on our computers relative to the discussions. Only of course if we were logged into our personal accounts shared with the cell phones. There's some interesting articles on the net about key word capturing.
Ah, Southpark! I'm dying to catch up on the years of episodes I've missed. Stopped watching when the kids got married and moved out. Thing is I can't get my wife to watch them with me on our TV. Maybe I can stream them on my phone. (Wonder if I'll see some Southpark ads pop up!)
Cheers!

Follow Ups:
I did the experiment of talking about a topic unrelated to our lives with my wife and sure enough we started getting ads about it. I have Alexa set up but only use it to turn on the lights and equipment. Nobody else in the house likes using it. It isn't worth giving up your privacy for that and I should turn it off.
But the cell phones are harder as we've come to depend on them for so much. I just now after I wrote that turned Siri off since I can't remember the last time I used it anyway.
Some say it's a myth. Some articles I've read tell you what embedded code to look for allowing the app to collect data.
Fits right in with some of our engineer vs what we supposedly hear topics, LOL!
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers!
