How baffled I am by what musicians can do!
Follow Ups:
Mostly Mozart from the 1970s.
The music is the Andante from Mozart's Piano Concerto #21, aka Theme from Elvira Madigan.
that's the opening bars of Beethoven's Pathetique piano sonata.
I've known people who could take music like that to a piano and then play it immediately, at first sight...... The only way I could play it is look at one note at a time to form the chords, and in maybe two weeks, be able to play those six measures....... At one-quarter speed.........
I just don't know how people can read notes so fast..... I wanted to be a musician, but I found sight reading music about as difficult as rocket science.......... (The few times I played in a band, I memorized the music, and only "pretended" to sight read. And this was with an instrument which only a single note can be played at any given time.)
Thus, I play the drums.
See ya. Dave
I once tried playing the drums..... My sense of rhythm was horrible...... I also whiffed at a drum or cymbal...... Then I dropped a stick....... The people in the music store started laughing.........
What's difference between a drumstick and a chopstick?:
A drumstick is a useful tool.
:)
"What's difference between a drumstick and a chopstick?"
One is something you eat, the other is something you eat with........
.......
You can't play Chopsticks on the drums............
Ya know when a trombone player is knocking on the door?:
Your pizza is here.
:)
Ya know when a drummer is knocking on the door?:
He rushes.

Hey Todd, don't feel bad! It takes a lot of work and practice to become adept at sight-reading. The more you play, the better you get.
A large portion of it can be broken down into a few areas: recognizing rhythmic patterns, interval patterns, dynamics, and stylistic attributes.
For example, well-known trumpet artist Wayne Bergeron (www.waynebergeron.com) has played so much music for so long that he can pretty much nail it the first time. That's one reason why he's one of L.A.'s top studio musicians, where this is a basic requirement. (Another reason is that he's a likeable guy.)
:)
It is indeed an amazing skill; I know the neural underpinnings of just about every aspect of playing music, but when I watch a skill musician play, I am just dumbfounded. It boggles my brain.
My most embarrassing moment in a band was when the band director asked me to play (alone) five bars back of when he stopped the music..... I had no idea where that was, I was frantically turning pages, and needed help from the person next to me........
