When Audiogon changed hands from the original owner in Michigan to the guy in ? North Carolina, then the prices started up up up. Actually the new buyer agreed to let the Michigan guy still run it, but soon broke the deal
Damn Agon STILL owes me something like $8 credit I will never see again.
IMO totally free is a problem. free mean all sorts of crap gets in. Like Craigslist. Including plenty of shyster activity.
I think a nominal charge is the best. $2 is perfect. Cuts the crap out.
...Whine as we might, it's a very effective site for buying & selling gear. Do I like the price hikes? No. Do I turn to Audiogon for results? Hell yes!
I allways try the free ones first, but allways end up selling it on Agon.
Abe, I've seen you add and subtract from your gear over the years, and not low dollar stuff either. Is the market still there to use Audiogon as I and many others did back 10 or 12 years, careful buying enabling "monthly rental try-outs" of high-end components?
I haven't bought and sold anything very 'high-end' on Audiogon lately, mostly sub $1000 items . As such, I still see good activity and interest on Audiogon unless the gear is way overpriced. My items tend to sell within a reasonable amount of time but I make it a point not to squeeze every dime out of the sale. Mine are usually priced fairly, or better than fair.
I no longer use Audiogon to sell stuff, as I find here and USA do it as well for free. I will buy at audiogon, though.
I will use eBay, since they only charge if I sell. I will also off set my price at eBay to account for their charge cost.
To each his own. Audiogon still has the highest success rate for me.
I have tried to sell the same items at the same prices on all of the sites. Ebay is the only site that has delivered consistent results for me. In fact 95% of sales for me have been through Ebay.
