If you edit your ad, the "Credit Card with Express Checkout" option is checked by default. If you save the edited ad, YOU CAN'T REMOVE THIS PAYMENT OPTION"!
The problems with this payment option are numerous. Here are a few:
- Audiogon requires you to ship the item before you have received payment.
- There is no facility to print a receipt.
- You receive payment days later with no notice that the deposit is complete.
- Audiogon has full access to your bank account.
- You can't remove Express Checkout from your Audiogon profile for 30 days after someone has paid with it.
Caution is warranted!

As an experiment, I listed a bunch of audio cables on several sites- Ebay, AA, Audiogon, US Audiomart, HeadFi. The listings, prices and terms of sale were identical across all sites. 22 items total. Items were cables and accessories ranging in price from mid 2 figures, to upper 3 figures.
My results were 1 sale from AA, 1 sale from Headfi, 20 Sales from Ebay.
My experience was repeatable. After doing the above, I have listed other items (tubes, tube amps, LPs) on all of the sites and Ebay. Ebay generated sales, the others sites did not.
Ebay, AA and Audiogon provide the number of "views" per item. In all cases, the number of views on Ebay was significantly higher than the number of views on AA or Audiogon. Love them or hate them, they are the largest venue around, with the most eyeballs and the most wallets.
Best,
Ross
I check eBay periodically. But when it comes to modern hi-fi gear, there isn't much on eBay. It seems to be more popular for vintage stuff and mid-fi HT/AV equipment. It's also very expensive and their policies and dispute resolution are very tilted in favor of the buyer.
...
Yeah, I've noticed audiogon has made some changes that cause a seller to think about alternatives. Increased rates. The credit card thing noted in th op this thread. Is their readership going down? I wonder.
other sites to trade I've used:
USAudiomart (good)
AudioAsylum Trader (good)
any other suggestions?

I haven't been very active in buying or selling used HiFi gear as of late, but I used to have good luck on the HiFi Shark website. There were usually quite a few listings for whatever item I was looing to buy. However, some of the listings I clicked on redirected me to the item's for sale advertisement on Audiogon, eBay, ec. So, the HiFi Shark web site may be more of a search engine for audio gear than an actual site where one posts their for sale ads, but I've never bothered to investigate in more detail.
They are a search engine for other sites. That's all they are!
AudioKarma has an active marketplace forum called Bartertown. You have to be a member to use it, which is $25/yr. But no further charges for listing gear there. I've had good results both buying and selling there.
eBay is great as well. You get a massive audience.
I use them as a last resort.
I have sold more on this site and US Audiomart in the last couple of years than on Audiogon. I avoid that site as much as possible as a seller.
Unfortunately, if something sits on these other sites for 3-6 months with little interest, I wind up having to post ads on Audiogon.
I just spent $170 to post 4 ads right before Christmas!!!
That's ridiculous IMHO. Long gone are the days of the $2 ad.
I wish more people would spread the word on these other sites. I always do.
I just sold some cables on Audiogon and told the buyer to check out other sites. I tell folks all the time, hoping that traffic will pick up on the other sites. US Audiomart seems to have picked up a good bit in the last couple of years. Not so much here.
I stopped using Audiogon the first time they asked for a credit card. I use US Audiomart and Audio Asylum

Until that changes they will remain top dog. I don't use them as often as I used to but still do and really haven't had any bad experiences. They charge what they charge and we choose to use them, or not.

....only lamenting that fact.
I simply wish that there were more educated consumers.
people would stop complaining about it here. Take it to Audiogon.

My post there is still there.
Yeah, but what if it didn't have the fanboy post on the end there? Think it would still be up?
I have no idea... just asking because of what I've heard in the past.
I usually post first on Audio Mart and here, too. Then, if the item doesn't sell in a month or so, the ad goes on Audiogon. The Agon ad gets about 3-4 times the number of page views as the other sites.
Unfortunately, when the ad goes to Agon, I have to raise the price on all 3 sites to cover the Agon listing fee. I sure wish folks would realize that they probably save money by buying on Audio Asylum or Audio Mart!
Update
Audiogon removed the unwanted payment option, Audiogon Express Checkout, after being sent a message about the issue.
Clarification: If a buyer uses this option, funds to the seller are released when a tracking number is entered in the order.
And from Audiogon Support: "Once you sign up for AEC and have linked your Paypal account, those options typically are added automatically since you have signed up for those options."
Audiogon has been courting dealers hoping they will make Audiogon their online storefront. Accepting credit card payments is part of that strategy. Same with printing shipping labels, Audiogon Protection, Buy It Now.
I avoid that stuff. I don't offer Buy It Now, and insist on Pay Pal unless it's a local pickup.

Thanks! for sharing- JerryS.
It will be interesting to see how long your post stays up over at AudiogoN.

I haven't used Audiogon in several months so I probably would not have noticed this default behavior when editing an ad. Thanks for the heads up.
Happy New Year!
Still here in Parker, still the same ole grind until they fire me! ;-)
Hope you're doing well.
