It's a nice time to listen to some music. I have the house to myself. The dogs have walked and are sleeping. Grisman/Garcia is spinning on the CD player. What could be wrong?
A neighbor is have some major tree limbs shredded. Arghh.

Could be wrong. Just kidding. I love that long version of Arabia.

Particularly if it is medical (as is probably 98% of all use), that could be a truly horrendous problem.
Late Saturday night ...actually Sunday morning at 2:30, I got a text from my neighbor asking me to turn it down and go to bed.
I live in a 1-acre zoning neighborhood ...so we aren't exactly on top of one another.
I had no idea how loud my little system sounded outside my house ...at 2:30 AM.
Now, if there had been machines shredding major tree limbs at the time, I think I'd have been okay.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
You might be surprised at what we can hear when it's very "quiet", with no other ambient sound to mask an irritating sound or to distract our attention. Back in CMG (contemporary music group), one of the first things our teacher (Swiss composer Rainer Boesch) did was to have us all not talk or make other sounds for something like five minutes. The room was a virtual cacophony of very quiet sounds!
:)
Listening exercises are excellent ways to fine-tune your ears, I experienced them from an early age thanks to a band director with sharp teaching skills. I recommend googling around to see if there's any info online about how to utilize this tool for personal use, or even if you're a musician that has never been trained by a large-group professional.
Worked for me.

Works the other way around, too. As reelsmith said. I often practice my electric guitars, via headphones. Just to maintain some peace in the household.
