In Reply to: Are all amps supposed to be non-inverting? posted by phenderson on July 19, 2000 at 15:53:34:
phender,
its a crapshoot. an amp with an even # of gain stages doesnt invert, one with an odd # inverts.
recordings are also a crapshoot, though MOST engineers try for an in phase recording, a good many arent. even form stage to stage, it can vary in a recording.
on one of the early dtd sheffield LPs, there are instructions about one side being out of absolute phase and to reverse the speaker leads on both spks to correct for it.
i never thought it made much diff bukt once i was auditioning an adcom cdp and reversed the phase. DEFINITELY audible! one way sounds more correct.

If the CD, crossover, pre-amp, etc. use IC's, it also depends on which input of the op-amp was used:inverting or non-inverting. If the non-inverting input is used it won't matter how many stages there are. Phase will be preserved. The odd/even factor only applies if the inverting input is used.Mike
