I also own an MR78, which I bought used on Ebay for $860. Mine arrived needing a new light bulb and some switch cleaning. The bulbs are available for $.50 at Radio Shack.
This is a beautiful piece of equipment which McIntosh will still service. They also can supply spare parts (which you probably won't need) and an original shipping container for storage or whatever. McIntosh takes their products seriously, even 21 years after the last production! Ask Sony, Yamaha, etc for service on their 20 year old equipment and see how far you will get!
The sound is wonderful - smooth, detailed, and clean. The tuner is good at screening out noise. The selectivity allows you to weed out spurious signals and weak adjacent stations. And the soft blue lights look cool in the dark.
You can shell out $10K or whatever for a Day Sequerra or other high-end tuner, or you can get a MR78 or one of McIntosh's other fine models and rest assured that it will not become obsolete for a long time.
I also own a McIntosh CD player and am equally fond of it.

Thanks for this review. I bought an MR-77 yesterday for only $410, including a beautiful walnut case, and it's good to know I can get a replacement light at Radio Shack for 50 cents. The MR-77 sounds as gorgeous as it did when I first heard it 30 years ago, and I've been lusting after one ever since. Call it an inmate's version of a Harley, but I had to have this as soon as I saw it on the Web.
Happy listening!
