Eight days ago, on Audiogon, I purchased a pair of speakers for an expansion of my home theater system. I'm still on hold pending the owner entering a shipping cost!
This has been a very strange transaction from the beginning. I originally made an offer slightly lower than the asking price, and waited five days without a response. Finally, when I went back and checked my page, where it had previously shown that my offer was awaiting review by the seller, it now showed no offer whatsoever. I never ecevied any e-mail or other notification that my offer was rejected, it was suddenly as though it never existed.
Finally, out of frustration, and driven by a desire to make certain I did not lose the chance to obtain the item, I simply purchased them at the asking price. My page at Audiogon continues to show that I have purchased the speakers, but the transaction is on hold until the owner provides a shipping cost. And, as noted earlier, it has remained that way for eight days.
I am now trying to decide what to do. I am in need of these speakers as I cannot complete the upgrade to my home theater system without them. These are also older and very difficult speakers to find, and these particular ones are literally new in the box from over fifteen years ago.
Any advice, other than continuing to wait endlessly for the buyer to enter a shipping cost to allow me to pay for them and complete the transaction? This could go on forever!

around the Audiogon system. AG doesn't know its sold and he's not telling them, or you. Just a WAG though.
Which is my biggest concern, and could well be true. In which case, I'm left with a big problem, unfortunately.
I don't know if you're just being a bit overly dramatic with your expressions (" I am also desperate for the speakers ", " I have a critical need for the speakers ", " big problem ", etc.), but if this is how you really feel about it, perhaps a bit of perspective is in order here? It's all just relatively unimportant "stuff", after all. Stuff that you can eventually get if you insist, and can exercise at least a bit of patience. In any event, I'm almost entirely sure your life doesn't depend on getting these particular speakers, now.

I was simply evidencing the frustration of having gone to very great lengths to secure two other sets of speakers by this long since out of business manufacturer and now likely not being able to complete the final set that was needed for my expanded home theater. Nine months of searching on E-Bay for the matching pair to this one, and a friend in LA driving 100 miles each way miles to get a second, related pair off Craigs list for me included.
Sure, its not the end of the world. I'm out around a thousand dollars if I cant turn them around and go in a different direction entirely, with other speakers. So it's not an insignificant issue, but yes, I'll deal with it.
... you have a "luxury problem".
When your speaker system is based on an old model by a out-of-business manufacturer that was never a big seller, this is the likely result.
At least in the current situation you didn't send the money and get cheated that way.

I was purchasing a new, in box, pair of Miller and Kreisel S100B surround speakers. These were to match another pair of recently purchased S100B's to be used as rear surrounds, and left and right "wides". I had also secured a pair of Miller and Kreisel S85 monitors (to be used for the "Height" speakers).
The issue, particularly with the S100B's, is that these are 15-18 year old speakers and are not only very difficult to find available for sale, but the vast majority have had a hard life and show it in both looks and performance. Locating them in very good condition, working perfectly, and not having had music blasting through them for a decade and a half or two is next to impossible.

Those literally were not there as recently as earlier this afternoon when I checked. Indeed, I've only seen three other pairs offered on E-Bay, or anywhere else, in the past nine months, and two were in far less than desirable condition.
Thanks for locating this listing. I'm going to notify Audiogon that I have no further interest in pursuing the ones I had "purchased" on there nine days ago. Since, as noted elsewhere here, the offer expired after 36 hours, I can see no way I am technically bound by it. And I certainly cant trust the seller, assuming he even still has the speakers, which I now seriously doubt.
I no hablo Ebay so bueno, so apologies if that was dumb.
Good luck!
Good move, Highlander. I have bought and sold many items on A'gon and Ebay and know how important fast, accurate, reliable communication is to the confidence of all parties. I wouldn't trust the seller any further than I could throw him. Even in the unlikely event the seller was OOT, so what? The seller has the responsibility to stay in immediate touch with the ad and notify the buy or prospective buyer of any scheduling issues.
BTW, you cannot expect much support from the good folks at Audiogon. I have a feeling that your new direction, if that is what you choose will go swimmingly. I'm rooting for you.

I had to look up the definition of "synchronicity" to find it's meaning. I thought maybe you were using foul language or something. Even my Scrabble/Word with Friends playing wife didn't know the definition. Anyhow, I'm impressed. Now I have the task of trying to stick it in a sentence during a casual conversation with someone.
Indeed. And thanks, very much, for all who contributed.
and are not reporting it to keep from paying the Audiogon fee.
(2% of the selling price if I am not wrong.)
This is a fairly common practice on Audiogon.
(Not that I've ever done this! Not me. Uh, uh. No way!)
But, (and again, I would NEVER do this!), but if I ever did, I would certainly tell any future potential buyers that the equipment in question is pending sale, in order to be polite and to keep from getting repeated emails. And that way at the end of the month, I would merely not list it again, (and tell Audiogon that my one sale fell through, and that the unit did not sell, so I was just going to keep it for now).
Again, not that I've ever done this!
(But I have read about other people doing it!)
My two cents worth.
The offer expires after 36 hours. That should be the red flag...If the seller doesn't have the courtesy to answer or communicate with you, I'd stay clear.

Does this mean I am no longer bound by the offer to purchase since it has been nine days? Something is seriously not right with this transaction, as we all seem to agree.
Given that I cannot simply wait to use my expanded home theater for an unlimited amount of time, I may be forced to change strategies. At this point, even though I have purchased two other pairs to match these, I may have to just take my losses, write them off, and go in a completely different speaker direction.
I share your opinion, and would walk away in a minute, but I am also desperate for the speakers. Without them, I cannot complete my home theater, and based on history, it could easily be six months to year before another pair show up for sale anywhere.
I understand, however even if you send the $ there is no guarantee you you will receive the speakers at ALL! Be wise and be patient - good luck.
P.S.
Talking out of experience on Audiogon and Ebay where I have over 8K feedbacks.

I had a somewhat similar problem. I contacted customer support who in turn contacted the person selling the item. Turned out the guy was on a 3 week vacation!
I throw my windows open wide and call to you across the sky.
From what i understand no you cannot..
So you are stuck in the middle..
Sorry to hear you are stuck, but Audiogon just seems to be dumbed down so nothing can be done.
The ONLY way you might get some response is to write it out as a post on Audiogons' site. maybe the person taking care of the site will read your post (as all of them have to be approved to be added)
And get you some sort of relief.
Otherwise perhaps someone knows WHO the seller is (offer the name of the seller from the gon?) and then the person can pm you who it is/
I tried to post in the Audiogon forums, using the exact text I have here. They refused to post it. This is extremely frustrating. Especially as I have a critical need for the speakers and they are very, very difficult to find.
There is a feature on the bottom of the ad listing the speakers where you can ask the seller a question. It does not appear unless you are signed in. Check the "private" box unless you want your question to be viewable by all. Just yesterday I asked a seller a question, and had an answer back in an hour.
I understand, and I would have had the option, except it expired days ago while I was waiting for the purchase to clear.
