I recently got a Samsung Infuse. As others have said, voice quality on cell phones is no great shakes, but playing mp3 files with a decent set of ear buds while at my desk is quite good. The app I use has a "5.1" mode that gives a pleasing spatial effect.
The phone was $0.01 after signing up for a 2 year plan. Seems you're looking to buy a phone w/o a contract. I don't know what the cost would be on the open market.

.
I signed up with AT&T as I already had a very basic plan with them and I get a 25% discount on phone plans through work, which saves me ~$10 a month on the plan I got. Since there is just me on the plan right now, I went with the individual 450 minutes nationwide plan. The data plan is 300 mb/month. Both are the least expensive plans AT&T has. This is my first smartphone and I'm lovin' it. The total monthly cost is about what I was paying for my old basic plan and land line. I'll be dropping the land line shortly.

No cell sounds good regardless of price and plan. With half duplex and low sampling rates the analog phones of the 80's had better sound.

Yup.Phones these days are like stereo equipment - there's stuff made for the masses, stuff made for techno-geeks, and stuff made for quality-conscious folks, all with some overlap. Apple's iPhone is nice, but you're locked into the Apple platform. I'd avoid Blackberry until after 1/2013, and then see how the company (Research In Motion, stock symbol RIMM) is doing. They're having a bit of a tough time right now, and delaying their next phone until 2013 - totally missing the 2012 Christmas season. I'd go with a Droid phone. Open dev platform, with apps being written like crazy.
I read in the industry news a few months ago that the Samsung Galaxy II was the top-rated phone among industry folks, with regard to features and quality. Now they have the Galaxy III. (It's marketed under different names at different providers.)
Here's my advice: Write down your requirements - data, apps, sound, video, geographical coverage, minutes, whatever. Then go to the local Verizon, AT&T, and Metro PCS stores and see what they've got. Ask a question and let 'em talk. Go back home. Read the brochures. Go back and ask more questions.
And, the heck with $40. You can get a decent phone for free. I took the cell phone plunge just two years ago. I didn't need a data plan, and didn't need to download apps. I just wanted a phone to have with me. It's a Samsung "flip-phone", it does the assigned duties quite nicely, and it was free. (Now, it's provided me with communication abilities that I hadn't even thought about a few years ago.)
I paid a little (maybe $60) for a similar model with a few added features and a ruggedized shell for my kid. That's all that was wanted, no fancy stuff. But, in general, my philosophy is, if you're going to spend money to buy one, buy a really good one that you won't want to replace in six months or a year. The price of a really nice phone is miniscule in the scheme of it all. $40 versus $200, spread out over 2-3 years - the $160 difference doesn't even show up on a one year budget. A lot of "regular" people spend that much in one month on entertainment.
I'm really happy with Verizon. AT&T is trying to catch up, regarding coverage, quality, and data speed.

I am talking about phone price not monthly fee in case I did not make that part clear...
If I have to pay more I understand but trying to spend less...
maybe stop by the store where you purchased the phone and ask them for suggestions. I am sure they help you....
...
ok , so you got the phone at Target and they might not be able to help you.
With that being said, why not go to a store that sells phones and explain to them what you are looking for and would like a phone for x amount ?
It might be hard for a member to suggest something since everybody lives in different areas and prices are probably going to be different as well.
Do you have metro pcs in your area ? I know that they have unlimited text, phone, internet for $40 a month....but if you dont have that in your area, then it doesnt do you any good. This is why I suggest going to a place that offers phone service.
way better sound than the LG that comes with Net10 that I now have but I want a better camera and other features.
You may be right, I should look up some info on the internet or go to a store and ask
Sometimes there are 'sweet spots' in price performance ratio and someone in the know may be able to tell me the obvious choice
I am bad at asking the proper question to get the answer I want and am in no big hurry
I am being really cheap as well, I paid $12 for my current phone and I pay Net10 about $20 month for service :)
again thanks for the help
Phil
