So now that the jackpot is $500 million (or 1/2 billion $ if you prefer) and you have bought $100 worth of tickets (and so are guaranteed to win) ...
What would you do or buy, audio or otherwise, if this "dream" comes true?
Here's my thoughts:
- Even with all that moolah I doubt I could bring myself to pick up a set or two of Tara Labs "The One".
- Yes, I would keep my wife around. She is my best friend and I would want to share our future together. Now she may have other thoughts on the subject and dump my sorry ass.
- Setting up trusts for the kids and future grandkids (generation skipping).
- Travel would definitely be in the cards.
- Purchasing a few new homes in places that we enjoy after travelling would probably be in the picture too.
- Then I definitely would need to set up a media room in each of those houses and explore the a wide variety of system types - one type for each house (SET & horns, MBL's perhaps, planers, and of course the obligatory surround sound home theater rooms).
A gentleman is best defined as someone who knows how to play the accordion ... and doesn't.

The tubes I have listed on AA Trader!
By not spendingit all you do not run the risk of goingto jail for not paying taxes.
My main plan would be to start a'charity' which would accept requests for a grant from the winnings.
However the request must have a $50 CASH payment to cover 'handling'.
Naturally EVERY recipient would get a form letter advising them they do qualify for a grant. However due to demand the grant is only $10.
Perfect. LOL!!!
BTW, you should be commended by everyone for your inspirational generosity.
I'm about to send you my application and a check for $50 + 3% PayPal fee.
I just need your account info.
Elizabeth,
The Bill Gates Foundation has given away a LOT of money......I'd have to look up the totals. People write in with a request and justification. Sums given out range from in the hundreds of $$ on UP to some pretty decent money.
Bill's partner in this? For a Billion and a half, you'd think Warren Buffet would have his name on the letterhead.
You know, you give me an idea, though. I'd look into funding an old-fashioned apprenticeship program. I'd cost less than a college degree, which has gotten out-of-sight expensive and you'd actually end up with someone with a SKILL.
That is, after I bought myself some SPACE on Hawaii's big island........somewhere on the dry side of the island, just north of Waimea towards Hawi.
Too much is never enough
reissue all their out of print DSD recorded SACDs and all of their DSD recordings never released on SACD. Also I would make all their DSD recordings available as DSD downloads.
"Happy Listening,
Teresa."
If I won the big bucks, I'd go into a self-made 'witness protection' program and go off the grid.
Maybe buy some acres on 'the big island' of Hawaii on the dry side of the divide between Waimea and Hawi. Some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen.
Too much is never enough
I think a 20,000 square foot cabin in the woods would be nice. A way of being in touch with nature, without you know, having to go outside and get dirty or anything. Nothing but the best in construction materials including old-growth lumber, with interior detailing of Brazillian rosewood, ebony, elephant (and whale!) ivory, perhaps a snow leopard pelt or two.
Sticking with the environmental theme, my subwoofers would be cleverly concealed within the taxidermied carcass of a white rhinoceros, while the satellites and surrounds would be similarly hidden within the stuffed bodies of spotted owls, which would also be animatronic, and would appear to "sing" and bob their heads in time with the music. Classy!
But I wouldn't anyone to get the idea that money would go to my head: I'd still be the same ole guy who pumps his own gas into his Bugatti Veyron just like anyone else.
No question money changes everything.
Just borrow big bucks from a close friend/relative and not pay it back and see.
Who needs silly audio equipment with that kind of cash? I will just hire a different band every night.
I would hire live bands and do away with all the silly debates of subjective audiophiles.
No more of these hand me down toys, cars, houses, wives, etc. I'd go out and buy EVERYTHING BRAND SPANKING NEW!!!!!
Find out what that new car, audio, house, wife smell is all about...........aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
but the kock brothers beat me to it.
.
They wouldn't have to do that for quite some time.
No way would i allow myself to become some tabloid fodder.
Although I would start a scam to offer folks some of the money. But they would have to apply. and a $50 application fee has to be prepaid.
Then I would send them a form letter telling them YES you have a grant! Here is $20. That is your grant. do good with it.
LOL!!!!!!!

that is separate from main house. At least 3 or 4 systems (horns, planars, dynamic, etc.), a fully stocked music library with a young hot assistant to order, catalog, and clean music.
I would buy new homes for my children, set up a trust fund for my grandchildren, give half of it away, buy homes on the water, on a golf course, a Manhattan apartment, travel the world, and blow the rest. :-)

And play whatever I wanted, any damn time I felt like it!

I would too. Radio has always been my favorite media. I would own the local blowtorch KMOX if it were for sale. They are the radio voice for the St. Louis Cardinals (current World Series champs!), the St. Louis Blues (leading the whole shebang in the NHL!) and I'd just buy the Rams, fire everyone and start over fresh! I'd buy every position player for 10 years (I better get out of sports and get back to radio! It's WAAAAY too expensive, now that I think of it...even with lottery winnings as big as what's currently being offered!)! I would own every classic rock recording ever made, run pure uncompressed audio, vinyl rips and all! My gear would be topnotch, internet distribution would make me famous wordwide as the best most comprehensive playlist ever. No ads, I would get donations and underwriters to advertise and not even play commercials or mention the names of the underwriters but it would be common knowledge that they were associated with us, everyone would just want to be asociated with the biggest most amazing sound quality, the biggest online and terrestrial listenership, and it would start a trend in radio that would usher in the lossless radio generation! I want this NOW even if I don't win! Who's going to pony up for this amazing idea? I could definitely handle the music director's job. I'm sure there are many engineering types here who could keep the ball rolling technically speaking. Who's in? I'm GAME!!!

That's actually a great idea.
I've spoken with my wife about it - buy the station and start having fun.
Give people a reason to buy a tuner again!
I can't take the credit for it. Did you ever watch "Northern Exposure" on TV, or the see the movie "Grosse Pointe Blank"? If so, those radio stations are my dream job!

first thing would be a nice distillery!!
I would then buy a top of the Symphonic Line system (I mean the whole shebang!) Speakers would simply drive me nuts, but think the twenty series Maggies would be right at the top of my list. Turntable would either be a VPI HRX with all the options or something that takes multi tonearms. And I'm gonna want a studio quality reel to reel tape deck to play all those boot legs
Lastly I'd be shopping for the diamond ring to end all diamond rings as she deserves the very best on the planet. Then we'd honeymoon in Italy so I could place my order for a new red car.
Once I got back home I'd buy a cigar store and build a new house. After that I'd simply live off the interest

Recurring fantasy?
No, wait, it includes a wife.
I'm getting old, and have two ex wives. But have been single for twenty years this comming June. Did what I wanted to do whenever I wanted to. I fly fished three quarters of the states, and two countries. I've been to races and everywhere, and really don't seem to miss them anymore. I've met musicians from everywhere, and watched many of them die before their time.
Almost three years ago I met "The Devine Ms G", she's two years younger than myself. We shared a love for acoustic jazz and opera. Can cut a rug with her all night long, and never regret it. She thinks nothing of pulling the cork on a good bottle pinot and listening to LP's all night long. About two months ago she told me she wanted to listen to something different tonight, and I told her to go up to the small bedroom and pick something out (she'd never been inside that room) while I took a shower. I heard her scream! She'd never seen so many LP's (5,000+) I come downstairs, and she has over a dozen records setting there. Everything from the Beatles White LP to Bitches Brew. Playing the Miles davis LP, I watched her read the liner notes intensely. Then ask me questions about Chic Corea and a couple others on there. That's when I knew she was the one! Traveling with me, she's met everybody from Benny Golson to Mel Rhyne (she didn't know Mel was Wes's side man). She's just about everything I could ever ask for. Now she tells me that she wants me to teach her to fly fish!! (now I do dread that). I getting ready to introduce here to Cuban jazz, and this should be a lot of fun.

and give most of it away to schools, charities, and research facilities.
Then, I'd buy Romanee Conti and only sell the wine via charity auctions.
And, then, I'd buy a small solar power company and get back from Uncle Sam all the money I spent on MBL and Romanee Conti!
;D
First off the 540 million is via 20 year payout. If you take the cash lump sum, it's gonna be like $300,000,000.
Then take a third of that out for taxes. Better yet half to be safe (if you overpay you get it back, if you underpay, you go to jail)
So now you got $150,000,000
Do you REALLY think MBL is worth less than $150 million? no way dude.

Unless MBL has business out of the realm of Hi Fi, I ain't thinking it's that valuable.
And a crib in New York for long jazz fix weekends.
I like your crib in NYC idea.
They acquire MBL with OPM (Other Peoples Money) and you get control for sharing the Board with them and a few other Bankers.
You write-off your listening sessions which take place on board your mega-Yacht or at one of your Palaces (mortgaged to the hilt at the Broker Call Rate) as Research.
When the inevitable collapse occurs, the banks are out millions; you walk away unscathed.
With 300MM, Elizabeth, you don't BUY things...that's so Middle Class!
If I ever won something like that I would buy or build housing for Children who need to be in group homes. I can vision a center with housing and then to have it being built larger and larger so every child that has Down Syndrome or a disability can live independently. A Dream
You must be bored. Get back to work you bum.....
