Dave A, you are a realist, I think. I can't really know that in a scientific way though! Using science in designing and building audio components does not imply not listening to the damn things. With no great zeal, I am certain that designing and building audio equipment is both science and art. Then the arguments as to what proportion to safely attribute to each aspect starts. Once you get into the metaphysical aspect of equipment, you have lost me though. That is truly a part of the music itself and not its material support in helping us achieve a facsimile thereof in our homes. BTW do you know what Shun Mook mpingo disks are? And can I be so bold as to ask you how they work?

Shun Mook, huh.
Boy, I have no idea how or if they work. In fact, I have never encountered any of their products, so can not comment....even if I want to. I am certainly a skeptic when it comes to the subject of audio tweeks. I try though.I did watch while Terry C put up little monkeys in his display room at THE though......
I agree that the blending of skills and understanding with intuition is the key to innovative design. As such, I also agree with another inmate here that the scientist is more apt at that blending than the [typical] engineer.....usually. Of course, nothing is without exceptions.
I just think 'if it sounds better, do it'.
