well, you could try this...Ask a quartet to play you some stuff, with you in front, blindfolded.
you'll somehow realise that suddenly you become more aware of the visual cues (not that you start to ignore the auditory ones of course). Kinda fun to do that :)
Similiarly in an audio system. We can't physically see the musicians, and for those who seek 'accurate sound reproduction', they may be subconsciously 'imagining' the musicians in front of them, from the perspective of the audience or the music conductor.
Follow Ups:
Since getting high-end equipment, I listen with my eyes closed. That's because the aural cues I get from a good recording conflict too much with the reality of the living room door, TV, vases, vcr et al before me. So it's more enjoyable to close my eyes and let images from the music and performance dance in my head. I often see partial or complete pictures of the instruments and players while listening. That's what so much fun about high-end. It alows me to feel much more like I am at the performance. Which is a heck of a lot more exciting than being a skinny schlub sitting in a living room in an old t-shirt and shorts - Walter Mitty 2001.
