I noticed a Red Rose R3 speaker in last night's episode of Sex and the City here in the UK. (The episode where Carrie starts dating a jazz club owner.) Not surprising, I suppose, given that Kim Catrall is married to Mark Levinson. And, fortunately, recognising it didn't detract from the show's usual witty banter, etc.
But it started me wondering later about what other memorable placements there have been. Some that come to mind include:
- Bang & Olufsen components and Martin Logan speakers in Friends
- a Nakamichi cassette deck in 9-and-a-Half Weeks
Do inmates recall any others?
Follow Ups:
Patrick Bateman sports what looks to me like KEF speakers that are poorly placed and tucked into the corner. The movie takes place in the mid-80s and these speakers seem fairly new...and are hooked to an old hifi with a huge equalizer if memory serves.
There is an entire line of dialogue about B&W...does that count...you even get the brand advertised by the spoken word.
Just saw the movie Ali tonight. There is a scene in which Ali goes to the home of the elder elija mohamed there is a ReVox A77 on a shelf.
Next scene it's nowhere to be found, also this is supposed to be happening in 1964-A77 came out 1973
.
"The Sims" computer game has Monsoon floorstanders.

I could have Sworn that in the Movie,"what lies beneath" I saw a McIntosh system going crazy, but I could be wrong...
Transcriptor Reference TT.
Anyone got an earlier onr that that?
Andrew
Yes, as a matter of fact. In "Young at Heart," starring Doris Day and Frank Sinatra, Doris Day's father, a music professor, gets a Grommes tube amp and pre for his birthday.
Another was Jack Nicholson's system in this Oscar winner, which featured those unmistakable McIntosh electronics and what looked like Thiel speakers, together with about a thousand CDs. Of course, the character Melvin was an obsessive/compulsive and a recluse, so he was a perfect candidate for a High End system.
Well my favorite is Jeff Bridges' system in "The Fabulous Baker Boys," which looked like a grungy Kenwood receiver powering some Wharfedale bookshelf speakers sourced by a Dual TT. Bridges portrayed a fabulously talented jazz pianist in Seattle who eked out a living playing lounges with his brother(played by his real brother, Beau Bridges). And then there was Michelle Pfeiffer as the love interest, which is a whole other string . . . The sound track was terrific.
When I worked at Harvey's in NYC during the 80's we used to rent out demo's for film shoots. "9 1/2 Weeks" rented the whole system from Bonnie Steinberg there (she was supposed to get a credit, but didn't)
The system was a Nakamichi RX202 cassette deck, McIntosh C33 preamp,
MC 2255 power amp (note the clever use of the self-test countdown-stripped out of later McIntosh amps to reduce the cost)
and JSE Infinite Slope Model One's.Our RM7si Signature's make a brief appearance in "Boiler Room"

Last season, there was a scene inside Grissoms' home. He had a McIntosh power amp and the big flat B&O 5-CD changer.

"Blue meters, big watts. This must be Heaven!"
I believe the comedy movie is "Love Potion #9" where a girl drinks this potion and no men can refuse her.She ends up taking this poor sap for his entire Krell rack and even has him carry it out to her car and pack it into her trunk. Off she drove and he was left with nothing (hmmmm, sounds not too far off from real life... He should have had a dating pre-nup =).
Please don't judge me too harshly for watching this lame movie.
*Please don't judge me too harshly for watching this lame movie*Record Reseach Labs LP#9 was named BEFORE the lame movie came out. Really!
Please don't judge me too harshly ...
Good call. I liked that movie -- one of Sandra Bullock's earlier ones. I thought she was going places.
I believe Tom's character had a top-notch system. The only piece I remember was a Sonic Frontiers SFL1 preamp. Although in later scenes it changed to another gold faced piece of gear.

Dont forget his Audiostatic speakers
I saw the apartment that was his in the movie. Amazing loft in center city Philadelphia.
Soderburgh's movie The Limey has a pair of Martin Logans. Also the obscure British film Four Dogs Playing Poker has what look like a pair of Logans (although they could be another 'stat). There is a nice shot of the characters in the scene from behind the panel, as the camera tracks behind the speaker.
Ok here's one I've always wondered about. Gene Hackman in the "Conversation” has a tube amp in his apartment that he uses when he plays his saxophone. I remember it being very visible at the end of the movie.Any ideas?
Gregg
For his audio work in the film, he must also have a lot of identifiable '70's gear
I think it was some older Macintosh stuff.(?)

See the link below for a previous discussion of this.Recently I was watching High Fidelity and noticed that in one scene John Cusack was listening to what looked like a vintage McIntosh preamp (a C-29 perhaps?), a Dynaco ST70 tube amp and a vintage Marantz tuner. I'd have to go back again to identify specifically, but it looks like someone put together a pretty nice vintage selection for the film.
.
Noticed the R3 in an episode myself. How about the VPI TNT turntable with ET arm Redford plays in "Indecent Proposal"? Nice touch for his character. they should have given him a good system to go with it.
The Martin Logans in Friends are right next to the wall... bet they sound REAL good that way. ;-)Cheers,
// Simo
A few years ago, my friend/boss was trying to sell his Martin Logans as he never could get them to sound good in his home...th only place I had to set them up for the guy that was travelling from New York to buy them was on the long wall, very close to that wall. If they could sound any better than what we heard for the few hours until the guy came, listened and took them, I'd like to hear it. John was upset, he said they'd never sounded that good in his house! You never know what a speaker will sound like in any situation until you try it...I, like most of us, go with the tried and true set-ups...but being forced to set those ML's up like that tought me a new lesson! When I first got into this unholy hobby, I set my speakers up in a room with a bay window at one end. In that setting the prescribed thing would have been to leave them where I originally put them, on either side of that bay window. My parents bought us a new couch and we had to move the speakers to the long wall, only a foot away from the back...the sound was so much better than I expected! The guy who had introduced me to the hobby (and sold those speakers to me) was amazed that they sounded great in that setting! Maybe it's the horsehair plaster in all the old homes around here???? YUCK! Probably just pure luck!
where he records sounds...he sees a crash on a bridge...?That Nagra recorder is awfully pretty!
It was Blowout, directed by DiPalma. Tres DisturbingTry the link.
Gregg
A good movie that got panned. A Nagra is also on MTV's "The Ten Spot".
a reepoff of my "Blowup"!
I forget the name of it, I think a was the name Vyger (not the brand). Of course, it was destroyed in a fight scene. A damn shame.
Lara Croft. she plays vinyl on the Clearaudio reference
Either a P3 or P25 with an Elys cart.
Also uses a full Levinson system and Revel speakers
The sitcom "Coach" for a period had a pair of Advent Heritage floorstanders in Hayden's living room.
B
They were on top of Joey's TV cabinet / bookshelf but I don't recall noticing them in recent episodes. A Clearaudio turntable had a brief appearance in the Tomb Raider movie.
Real friends don't let friends watch "Friends"! Next you'll be telling us you watch "Ally McBeal"!!!What a "girlyman" show! ;-)
Best regards, Land Shark
You know, its that quality time together / companionship stuff. Fortunately she goes to bed early and then I can watch real man entertainment like "South Park" and drag racing."Ally McBeal"? Them's fightin' words where I come from, son!
Friends is a bad show with a great script. Is THAT weird! Ally McBeal is addictive but only if you started smoking it early on, then almost kicked it but Robert Downey Jr. came along and got you hooked again. And you watch it and think, well I do anyway, this could actually be good and not just a habit if the writers took it seriously. They're married to undercutting themselves minute by minute. That's the show's shtick. Let's take up a collection to rehabilitate Downey, Jr. He's the only actor I know who can do what they think they're trying to do.
The "Friends" should try wiring up their Martin Logan's sometime also.
I think the short lived Cosby Mystery show had a Carver speaker (the ribbon job that looked like an Apogee Diva), didn't it?- DeeCee
