I am finding my coffee sort of tasteless lately.
I want a dark roast (little caffeine) with a rich
strong taste. (like the coffee used to taste in the
Navy mess hall)
Follow Ups:
markets throughout the USA I'd highly recommend Peet's.
They do mail order too.

There was a time when I was addicted to their French Roast. Even had a fling with their chicory blend for a while.
we now drink their Signature Blend Dark Roast we get at Kroger. On sale $4.99, hard to beat. We also rotate in HEB's (Tx groc store chain) French Roast

I drink Community coffee and while I have tasted better, for the price it's hard to beat IMO. I used to drink 8 O'clock, but they went downhill several years ago. Community is better!
Well whadayah know?
We actually agree on something.
Yeah, we probably agree on many things when politics isn't involved. :)
I am encouraged to hear you say that. I suspect you may be right.
Here a how to on making Navy coffee.
I had mine at the mess hall at Treasure Island ...
I think not so hardcore : )
If you want a thick taste on the pallet, try the Ethiopian and Kenyan beans and stick to 'single origin' offerings, as opposed to blends.

That's part of my reason for dark .... as well as the taste ..
In the 70s, long before Starbucks was a thing, I lived in the Italian/Bohemian neighborhood of San Francisco (North Beach). I discovered Graffeo coffee and have never found anything better. I'm in New Orleans now, which is a pretty good coffee town, but the best coffee I've tasted comes out of my kitchen using Graffeo beans that I get by mail order.
For many years, Graffeo was wholesale, though you could get roasted beans by the pound from the storefront on Columbus Ave by ringing the bell and waiting for someone to come out from the roasting factory in the back and deal with you. Cash only and no change offered. No receipt. It went straight into someone's pocket, but who cares?. A well-known secret was the Dunkin Donuts two doors down that served Graffeo coffee 24/7. Twenty cents for a waxed paper cup of the best coffee in the world. With free refills. Those were the days.
. . . in theory, practice and theory are the same; in practice, they are different . . .
I remember a good cup at a pizza place on Columbus & ? ....
I grew up in S.F. and used to go to Cafe Trieste and also buy their whole bean coffee, I remember Graffeo but didn't know you could buy their coffee. Unfortunately, I can only drink decaff now I somehow developed an intolerance to caffeine, but I still love coffee so I think I will order some Graffeo whole bean. There was a bar on Columbus, Porto Fino, I think where I used to stop for coffee on the way to work, they used to ask me how much water I wanted in my coffee so I used to get it half full for a stronger cup.

I have no idea what the Navy mess hall coffee was (I had some at Camp Lejeune once)... but have you looked at mail order places?
Check out the roaster list at home-barista.com: https://www.home-barista.com/resources.html under the "Roasters" section.
They have a lot of reading there also about coffee. One of my favorites I linked below (Mad Priest)
Thank You .... I probably will do mail order .... Do lots of grocery
shopping there ....
