I still use a now defunct Hearthware I Roast v. 1 and v. 2 digital air roasters and they work fairly well for outside roasting, handling about 4-5 ounces per batch.

Wife and I started about 6 years ago with various popcorn poppers and other bizarre roasters.
Not familiar with your "defunct" roaster, but see that Sweet Maria's sold them. I'm running a SR800 with the extension that allows an 8 oz. batch.
How long are your roast times? What darkness level?
and that definitely speeds things up, but for City and City+ roasts, about 8-10 minutes.
I'm not an espresso drinker, so medium roasts are what I shoot for.

I dislike the dark roast [probably because the addition of rubusto to give it a bitter kick)
Rubusto beans are generally more caffeinated (up to 50% more) than the more praised Arabica varietal, but are notably more bitter and a lot cheaper.
To get around the bitter issue, we just roast 'dark,' which kills it off, but still leaves some caffeine, since it started off with more by being the rubusto floral.
They're a lot cheaper to begin with.
Most people don't know what a truly good cup of coffee/bean tastes like.
