I grew up in the Chicago burbs and ate at the original Villa Park Portillos many times (although I preferred the Lombard location). Here in Arizona several Portillos locations have opened up but ever since Dick sold off the company quality has gone way down to the point that I don't bother eating there anymore.

The two I go to when I visit are in Northbrook and Skokie are still good as of 2 years ago.

  FWIW, there used to be a place on the north side of Irving Park Road just west of the airport that served up an Italian beef that I thought was noticeably better than Portillo's. It's been a long time since I was down that way, though, so I don't know if it's still there or not.

    I think the one that was on Irving was Jay's. Also can't forget Frannie's just down the road!
