Hi Have an ST 70 and would like to have some ideas of good speakers to match with it. Preamp will be either a Citation I or AR SP 6B. Most likely the Citaton. Due to illness and diability and living arrangements have not heard my stereo gear in years. Not real techy but undersdand some. Did love my Citation on my DQ 10s.
Would appreicate some direction and budget has to be considered.
Thanks you for at least reading this.

I use a highly updated ST-70 daily ... driven by a vintage Marantz 7T preamp and the sound is wonderful. Everyday speakers are Klipschorns. I moved a pair of Dynaco A25's from their "rear speaker position" and placed them in front of the Khorns for a listen last evening.
While vintage A25's are not really bookshelf speakers, they are fairly small. The stereo image from both CD's and LP's is very good with modest bass, lovely midrange, and satisfactory highs. The sonic hologram is beautiful with excellent width and very good depth.
From both a size and sound standpoint, you would be hard pressed to find a better low cost solution for your present situation. And, you can always move the A25's to the rear position when you upgrade the fronts.
To dlb945 THANKS for taking the time to respond. I will keep your suggestions in mind. Nice preamp you have. I have a Citaion I which I have not used in years I want to fire up and hope its ok. Like to match the two together. Had it for years and loved it. Got started up messing with this ST 70 when I was thinking about getting my old 'big system' together to give to my son. This Dynaco I had but never got to use (long story). Not a tech which is that hinders me a lot. Just found out the amp had a wrong type rectifier tube. Geeze... Trying to get things together becuse I have to do a lot of cleaning out of stuff due to health and living arrangements. Trying to push on. Thank you again I do appreciate it. I would like to have the amp checked out but don't know where.
If you liked the DQ-10, you might like the Music Hall Marimba, which also images very nicely. It's all the rage these days at around $350 a pair. Heard them a couple of weekends ago and felt they outperformed more expensive bookshelfs from EPOS and Focal.
Thank you Peter I appreciate your input. You really caught my attention mentioning the DQA 10s. My son will have them soon. Been away from my stereo for a long time. I only have my 10s as a reference so you know its hard to judge a bookshelf speaker. Will definately keep these in mind if I ever make a change. Like I said ha you mentioned the 10s. Was just looking to see what would compliment my ST 70. Not a tech or an expert but always loved my stereo and music. Hey thanks again...
There are probably dozens and dozens of bookshelf speakers that will mate well with the ST-70. You mentioned budget, but not a price range, and whether you are considering new only, or new and used. I have mostly used LS3/5As for the past 35 years, and they have great synergy with the ST-70. New ones are still being built by Stirling Broadcast. I don't recommend buying used as their cult status has inflated prices beyond the cost of a new pair in many cases.
If I were in the market for something new, the KEF LS50 would also be at the top of my shopping list based on the numerous comments I have read. They are said to be similar to LS3/5As and are in the same price range.
If that is more than you care to spend, I would highly recommend the Andrew Jones designed Pioneer SP-BS22 LR. Mostly out of curiosity I bought a pair a few months ago on the recommendation of Frank VanAlstine. Look for his thread on Audio Circle, Cheap and Cheerful section. By far the most enjoyable $130.00 pair of speakers I have ever encountered. Not perfect, but as Frank stated, better than a lot of 1000.00 a pair speakers.
Thanks again. Came across a pair of Infinity Primus 160s. Don't know anyting about them but someone had them so I will give them a try. Was looking for someting that would compliment the ST 70. All good recommendations by you nice people out there and I have to say again it is appreciated.
While specs don't tell the whole story, it seems like they'll work, at least from a power requirement standpoint. As long as it doesn't dip too far below 4 ohms, you should be good. One thing I did notice in the Primus instruction manual. Even though the speakers have wall hanging key hooks on the back, Infinity's recommended placement diagram shows them well away from the wall. Not too many speakers are "voiced" to work up against the wall, so at some point you may want to consider some that are (like The Horn Shoppe Horn), if these 160's don't work out for you.
But I hope they do, and I hope you're feeling better soon, too!

Again thank you. Guess for now theee will be ok. Maybe in the future I will be able to get into something more. Was just trying to see if there was anything to watch for but considring my circumstances I will just leave it for now. Want to get my son up with my main system which had been down for well many years. First was living situation having moved back home from out of state and then becomming ill about 10yrs ago. oh well. Need to clean out stuff and now my son has room so he gets my loved Dahlquist DQ 10s. How do you think about bookshelves after having those for many many years. Thanks so much...nice to see there are stil nice giving people out there the way things are today.
I'm actually much happier with my Horn Shoppe Horns than I was with my Dahlquist DQ-10's. They are more dynamic, more "musical" and much easier to drive. They certainly aren't as "audiophile", in as much as the Horns don't image as well as the DQ-10's. But any live music event I've ever gone to, there was no "imaging".
I don't know if your ST-70 has been in service lately, but be sure and pay attention to the power supply. If the quad capacitor is original, replace it, or risk taking out a transformer!
Good luck with your new system, and hope you feel better soon.
To 1973shovel forgot to thank you for your best wished for me. Nice of you. Good to see there are still good people out in the world these days.
As far as the capacitor goes can you point me in the right direction as what and where to get? I could try to change it.
Thanks again and hope all is well with you...

Link below.
If you want to keep the stock look, the link will show you a few quad (four caps in one can) caps.
I should follow my own advice, because the ST-70 I have in use still has the original can cap. But I check it with an ESR meter, and each section checks good. It's still a time-bomb though. I will replace mine using an SDS board , because that will offer me the option of what brand of caps I can use, in both brand and capacitance value.
Joe also offers one here:

I hope this helps!
Hi thanks again. I don't beleive this has ever been serviced. Looks like I have some work to do. Just ordered a rectifier tube and a couple of 7199s. Not a tech but I can solder. Thanks for the heads up.
Hi,
I have used Magnepan MMG with Dynaco st-70 in the past. In a small room, it was heavenly. Unless your into hard rock, rap, or head-bangin music, it is bliss .

Hey thanks for the reply. Maggies would be nice. Heard them long ago and were great. I just realized that I should have been more specific. For now I need bookshelves. No room and its for my small very vintage system. Good choice though...
Hello audio40,
When you say "I need bookshelves", do you mean a "bookshelf" sized speaker, or will you actually be placing them on a bookshelf?
I'm asking, because if you have room for a floor speaker, then I'd recommend The Horn by the Horn Shoppe. It's relatively small, and fits right into the corners of your room, so they don't take up much space.
They're single driver 8 ohm speakers, so they are very coherent and easy to drive (I use a 10 watt per channel amp on mine).
They're a dynamic speaker, meaning they don't need to be turned up very loud to come alive. I used to own DQ-10's too, so you'll know what I mean when I say that.
They have plenty of good reviews (if that means anything to you) and you have 30 days to try them in your own room. If you don't like them, you can send them back. Review link is on the Home page of the link below. I have no affiliation with The Horn Shoppe, other than being a satisfied owner.
Good luck with your search!
Hi 1973shovel Thank you for your reply. Again I wasn't clear sorry have health issues and not feeling well. Should have said bookshelf size speakers. Don't have much room literally. long story. Was just trying to find a good speaker match for my system with the ST 70. Will keep your suggestion as a reference if things change and I do have room. Again thanks I appreciate your help. Loved my DQ 10s which have been stored for over 10 years and going to give them to my son since he has room.
