if you could only pick one or two, what would you get?

I have both the Anatole Fistoulari / Khachaturian: Gayne Ballet Suite which contains one of my all time favorites (Gayne's Adagio -- a piece you'd recognize from the movie "2001" and from the "Alien" franchise) and the Sir Malcolm Sargent / Respighi: Pines & Fountains of Rome. Both are very good recordings and the performances are top-notch IMO. I'd recommend either (or both).Going by reputation only, the Enrique Jorda / Falla: Three Cornered Hat is supposed to be excellent. Bottom line, you'd probably not be disappointed by any of them.

I have ALMOST all of them (not quite), and I certainly agree about the Fistoulari/LSO performance of Khatchaturian's "Gayne". The other one I might recommend is the Goosens performance of Villa Lobos' "Little Train of the Caipira" together with the Ginastera Suites from his ballets, "Estancia" and "Panambi".As has been discussed here over the years, there are minor pitch sags in a couple of places on just about every release in this series (probably due to the age of the 35mm masters). Aside from that, the series is very worthwhile.

I have them all. The Villa Lobos and the Khachaturian Gayne are the top choices for best sound and performances. Then I would recommend the Tchaikovsky No. 5, Pines/Fountains of Rome, or the Shostakovich No. 9.
The London recordings (LSO) tend to have better sound that the US recordings. The only real clunker is the Khachaturian Piano Concerto.
That version of "Three Cornered Hat" looks pretty neat. Haven't heard it though I have it on another label on vinyl, and love the music.
I do have (on vinyl) the "Pines of Rome/Fountains of Rome". Sonically, not a great recording, but the performance is (IMHO) pretty much perfect- lots of bombast and delicacy!
