The Benchmark DAC1 is not lean in the mids. None of the reviewers, e.g., John Atkinson, John Marks, of Stereophile, et al, have ever mentioned this. As a DAC1 owner I can certainly confirm there is no leanness. What some may be hearing is the removal of the jitter-induced grunge that makes a fatter thicker sound in the mids and bass. But this is simply distortion which, once removed, provides a substantially cleaner, faster, more accurate sound -- like the top Mark Levinsons, Thetas, Wadias.

Follow Ups:
I launched a post about the mids being kinda sterile when I first got it b/c most owners mentioned little change during break-in. Mine started with instruments sounding very crips and clear, but vocals were lean, strident or bleached. Every thing got smoother and more cohesive after a week.Benchmark comments on how the lack of jitter can be interpreted as lean - which was the case for me and took another couple of days for me to get use to it. I did reconsider other units ( <3k) that did sound fuller, warmer, but in direct a/b was distorting or blurring the details. Check it out for yourself; most offer a 30 day trail.
Happy hunting.
Ned thanks for saving me 2k, I was waiting for comments from others with "real" speakers before commiting...Maggies rule!
