to me.I already bought the Atari transformer. Any other tweaks I should be looking to do? Going to run it with a Pioneer DVD player and see what I get. I've searched this Forum and the DIOMODS yahoo group for any data.
Will report my impressions with my HE10.1s and Heath UA-1s.
thanks,
Follow Ups:
A few tweaks to try:1. The Mensa upgrade was the best. If you only got the SMART, send it back and spend the extra $150 for the MENSA
2. Use the boldercable PS upgrade. I used a Stancor, it worked but nowwhere near as good as the Bolder PS.
3. The DIO case is pretty resonant. Try placing some kind of damping device on top. Anything from Sorbathane sheets to bricks/stones or other heavy damping device. Also, mount the DIO using some kind of simple device like EZTac since the DIO feet are pretty lame. I use heavy metallic "pucks" on the top of the case. It certainly prevents the DIO from rattling.
4. Consider your digital cable. I use Bolder, which seems to resolve the synching problems a bit better than others. Curious to try the Acoustic Zen stuff...
5. Leave the DIO on all the time plugged into a wall or powerstrip. A cold DIO really sucks...
6. Replace your plug outlets with some Pass & Seymour ones, about $10 at DIYCable

and all I can say is wow!I've managed to build a very nice little budget system here... don't get me wrong, I'm no audio newbie - just out of the stereo scene for awhile. I've owned mostly tubed gear - Citation, Dyna, Eico, etc.
Anyways listening to the combination of low priced Pioneer DAC, the Bolder Smart DIO directly fed into a pair of refurbed Heath UA-1 monoblocs. Speakers are a pair of kitted Adire HE10.1s on sand filled stands. All wire is Canare from clearcables.com. No preamp, since the Heaths have their own volume control.
Sound? Very very dynamic for 10" drivers. Great pace and they really 'hold the tune'. This little system really tells the truth of the recording. Makes me feel like a recording engineer listening to the final mixdown (I used to do live PA). Check out the AC/DC remasters and wow!

I am using a smART DAC also. It is a good piece relative to higher priced stuff I think also. Would like to have enough to get the MENSA mod.
