The only difference I can remember between my original CDM12.1 and the VAM1202 I replaced it with, is that they used smaller motors on the VAM1202. It seemed slightly quicker when jumping from one end of the CD to the other too. (And of course the previously mentioned disc clamp differences).

I would think if it says CDM12.1 on it then it is compatible, even if they subtly changed the design so it appears different.
