I'm familiar with the Planar 3 and am considering a Gungnir. Thanks in advance.
Follow Ups:
At the time I liked the Gumby better as something wasn't right with my TT setup. I just recently got the new ifi iPhono 3 phono pre amp and that is what opened up my Rega to a new level. Since I don't have Gumby anymore but knowing how close it is to Yggy I would say they are close to Rega setup now.
Sounds like the phono pre was the upgrade you needed. With my CDP when comparing vinyl and CD version newly released albums I didn't have a preference of one format over the other. Depending on the album I might prefer one or the other, sometimes not, so I write it off as differences in production not media. That said overall I prefer listening to vinyl records over CDPs.
Moving to listen to CD rips via a hard drive -> RPi -> DAC improves the sound of digital greatly. Choice of DAC is very important but I think CD transports are the weak link. I'm looking for more improvement when I get around to switching to solid state storage. But still I suspect, though I haven't run the comparisons, that production is still going to be the deciding factor on whether CD or vinyl is preferred if there is a preferred format for any particular album. At this point it's hard for me to state of preference for listening to the harddrive or the TT. They sound different but both are enjoyable. This surely speaks to the fact that though my experience is influenced greatly by the "sound" of a stereo I am not an objectively critical kind of listener - if that makes sense.
The best sounding recordings I own are live downloaded lossless digital recordings played back via the hard drive. The Gungnir interests me because I can start without the multi-bit and upgrade later if I want, and I might have bought one a couple years ago when I purchased the NAD but they aren't available in black.
