If you leave the player in the SACD mode, will it (or even can it?) use the SACD laser to read the redbook layer, or does it automatically have to default to the redbook laser?
In other words, would it be recommended to switch to the "CD" mode when playing a redbook in order to reduce the use & wear on the SACD laser?
Follow Ups:
it's the same laser reading mechanism ...
with regards,
" it's the same laser reading mechanism ..."It is the same mechanism but not the same laser or the focal length of the collimator lens. A bona fide SACD player mechanism physically swaps between the two (I am not referring to universal DVD mechanisms which are in the majority of lower priced players that will read SACD).
The player recognises the type of disc from reading ToC and will default to the correct OPU in accordance with this. So the selection of SACD in the menu in practice only relates to choosing the required layer of hybrid SACDs. Put a standard CD in and the player automatically selects the correct OPU configuration.

aha ... thanks PAR ... my understanding was that it was a focal mechanism when reading the disc layers
so, should immatthewj be concerned re: wear on the player due to menu choice?
regards,
" should immatthewj be concerned re: wear on the player due to menu choice?"Good question. There are two elements in play here. One is the life of the laser, the other is the mechanism that changes the two optical pickups.
In regard to mechanical wear most of the true SACD mechs have used a gearing system to swap between the two. Unfortunately the gears for many of the most used OEM SACD mechanisms ( e.g. from Sony or Teac/Esoteric) have used plastic gearing with a limited life. I know as I have been through a few on some VERY expensive transports.
So the OP could minimise the switching from one to the other. But then the question of laser degradation over time comes into question.
Overall there is no good answer. If you are going to use the same player to access DSD recordings and PCM ones @ 16/44.1 via optical disc then expect to have to replace the entire OPU unit every few years. If you are a light user the intervals between changes may be more widely spaced. Incidentally although I have said that I am referring to bona fide SACD mechanisms I am aware of a number of questions arising here about universal DVD mechanisms that will no longer read SACDs.
Currently I am waiting to see how the newish Denon/Marantz OEM mechanism works out (mine is only a few months old currently and is very lightly used as most of my CDs are ripped to a NAS).
NB : I don't know if the OP has a true SACD mech or is using a universal DVD type.

Par, this is a newly purchased Marantz SA10.
It came from MD & was advertised & marked down as "factory refurbished."
Well you are using the same CD/SACD mechanism as me ( though mine isn't in an SA10). Fingers crossed for both of us ;-).
However I hope that I have satisfactorily answered your question about redbook CD replay. You don't have to worry, the machine will do it for you.

You have. Thank you.
Thanks.
