I'm wondering if purchasing a decent DAC. like the Bifrost, and running it with my Onkyo C-7030 cd player (which has a Wolfson DAC, not able to find out which model number), would be an adequate sonic improvement over the Onkyo by itself, to warrant the expenditure....
I have a headphone system with a TOTL amp and headphones. Very sensitive to changes. I definitely don't want to upgrade the cd player, as that would be too big an expenditure right now.
The more opinions, the better! Thanks.

I understand the Schitt stuff DOES have a return policy.I would want to know everything about it first.
(I think they have a 15% 'fee' on returns?)
Anyway, until a person actually hears the items and compares, with digital stuff IMO it is a total crapshoot as to whether one can or cannot hear a worthwhile improvement.
Many years I used to think all CD transports were the same. Noooooo. Not after hearing a SCD777ES Sony as transport, (and my old transport was so inferior I was embarrassed to sell it!!
Then another has written about buying a new $$$$ DAC and being totally let down it was no better than a used DAC they paid $250 for!
So all in all it is 100% crapshoot on "Will this new DAC sound better than my CD player?"
You have to be able to listen to find out.
Different DAC(s) and different CD players/Transports will sound, well different. Typically, the older spinners from Japan, Pioneer Elite, Sony ES, Denon, make the best transports.
Well I just ordered a Schiit Modi Multibit. 15 day return policy. Will try it out and see if it I get a noticeable improvement.
Thanks for the help.. it led to this purchase.
I found the Multibit upgrade to the Bifrost a big step up from the Uber version.
I love the music of Dmitri Shostakovich ...
But no basis for the comparison you are looking for
