Could you guys shed some lite on whether tidal actually decodes MQA files and therefor you don't need an MQA dac
Thanks
Alan

I do not use Tidal nor have I tried MQA, yet.
The desktop ap does a partial decode in software .. its not quite the full monty where the dacs characteristics are known but its pretty good.
you can check it out under tidal settings / streaming ..hover near your output device and a cog will appear , click on it and you have the option of passthrough MQA .. clicking on or off while you are listening will either pass it thru if on or if off , decode it .. difference is pretty obvious

Roon/tidal ..SBT -DIRAC minidSP DDRC22-Devialet- Giya G1's , Swarm of 4 x SVS sb13 ultra subs .. dedicated and fully treated room
no matter what I check or don't check,on the Tidal app, my Lumin..that does not decode MQA.. only shows 16/44 on the Master albums that I add to my Playlist..
Do you have passthrough turned on or off?
Alan
Thanks
Why would you use the passthrough?
Alan
If you have a MQA dac , you use pass thru so it decodes , not the computer

I went to check this out and now playing MQA master files the blue light on the explorer2 does not light up in passthrough either on or off. Rebooted system and still no blue light. Worked fine the last two days. Guess I will try later today

So you can hear the 44.1/16 Lossless FLAC version without additional processing?
Wonder how the MQA on a non-MQA DAC sounds compared to Amarra for TIDAL on the same DAC?
No
you would not here a 16/44 file if playing a master file with passthrough turned on. You would here the 24/96 file used to carry the MQA encoding.
