I rarely listen to CDs, since I'm more into streaming my FLAC music files & vinyl. However, my wife still likes spinning CDs but mostly as background music when doing things around the house.
I need a new Blu-ray/DVD player and was thinking of getting an OPPO player and connecting it to my integrated amp via digital coax (SPDIF).
Would this make sense? How good are the recent (newer) OPPO models at playing CDs and SACDs?
Follow Ups:
Note that the if you connect via SPDIF, you won't get the full res 24/192 soundtrack, it will be downsampled to 24/48 due to copyright restrictions. The only way to get the original audio is to use HDMI or the analog outputs.

If so, why bother? Get some junk for a couple of bucks.
It seems that Oppo are refreshing their range of players at the moment. Check out AA Hi-Rez which has some news posted as there seems a little confusion as to the the extent of the new model range. Perhaps it may be worth while hanging on to your money for a few weeks until it is clearer what the new offerings from them will be? You don't mention budget so I am assuming that you may not only be considering the cheapest one.
Oppo has just released an updated model using AKM DAC chips and a revised output stage.
I have the 103 and enjoy it (primarily as a Blu Ray player) but its analog stage is a touch lean for my taste and not up to the quality of the DAC in the music system.
I'd look into the current model.
Oppo has just released their newest player, the 203, which play UHD blurays. It has a superb audio design and will play FLAC files. With each successive generation, the engineers have improved the audio capabilities in their players and while you can spend up for the top model, which has a high-end analog output statge, the 203 is purported to be an excellent player. The 205 will be released into next year if you can wait and can afford $1100. For now, the 203 goes on sale to the general public on the 16th. Pre-orders are already sold out.
The 103 and 105 series have been discontinued.
Hi, samurai7595,
I use an OPPO DV-983 DVD player as a CD player in my other stereo setup (small living room system) and it's fine for background listening. I've also used an OPPO BDP-103D (which I use with a HT projector) as a CD player and it was also good but I prefer my Rega Apollo as a player. However, when comparing the two as transports feeding SPDIF into a DAC, which is what you're doing, there was little/no difference.
I don't have any SACD discs so can't say much other than I've noticed that the OPPO players seem to be very popular for SACD playback.
I recommend getting the Darbee edition of OPPO's players (BDP-103D/105D) for home theater. The difference in overall image quality is striking.
Regards,
Tom
I have an Oppo BDP-103 and I think it is an excellent CD player. Indeed, if you only use it for CDs it's a great value, it compares very well against my Musical Fidelity CD transport and Counterpoint DAC combo for just $500.00. And sounds great with the few SACDs I have. I've had mine for two years and love it.
Best regards, Ralph
