I tried using my laptop as a digital source.
I connected the laptop with a USB A cable to the USB B connection to my Marantz NA7004 DAC.
Odd but the volume control worked on the laptop and the sound was not good at all.
I then tried my iphone, I think it's called a fast jack??? to USB on the NA7004. As expected no volume control via the iphone and the sound was much better. The Marantz was using it's own DAC.
Question: How does the iphone sound using it's 3.5mm analog jack out? I've seen that the laptops analog out isn't very good at all.
Or how do I get a real digital output from the laptop?
Follow Ups:
An obvious first is to check the USB settings

USB can send control commands as well like Volume control.
Also check your media player, amy DSP going on?
A refinement would be not to use DS but a protocol like WASAPI
You need a media player supporting this protocol to do so

BTW: the 7004 has DLNA, you should be able to pull the music from the network including the audio on your PC.

The Well Tempered Computer
I've notice that Europe is always ahead of the US in this area. Actually Europe has always been ahead of us in the entire internet/wireless/connectivity area.
After reading that site I think I'll stick with my Marantz NA7004 for a while longer. Things are continuing to develop in that area. At some time in the future I'll upgrade when a significant upgrade, or streaming change becomes available.
Thanks
