Image is very big to me. In my system the Trivixta SACD ( tube output, but just playing redbook) out imaged by a good bit my phono rig: Grade Master reference on a Rabco SL 8E on a TD 125 Mk II using a nice 3-12AX7 based phono pre with tube regulation and passive eq. Dont sell CD short for that, separation numbers are much lower in phono carts than in any CDP. Of course there are other reasons which vary from system to system and by the actusl gear used.

I agree fully. I do CDs and SACDs exclusively, and I think imaging is a strong point of my main system. Of course, it's recording- and system-dependent: I've heard CDs that image flatter than a pancake, but I've also heard LPs afflicted with the same problem. And some rigs just image better than others.

Yes the original recording is the most important thing sound and image wise. Get a copy of Zap Mama "A Ma Zone". Amazing. Also Mino Cinelus self titled album on Blue Thumb recorded and mixed by Pat Thrall. OOP but shows up on eBay often. Maybe more amazing.
