Actually.........I always got a kick out of your tag line. I was just funnin' with ya is all. Bring back your tag line! F'em if they don't like it.Now that you mentioned it; what is it about this hobby that attracts so many people who 'need to loosen their sphincter'? :-)) It seems to be an area that attracts so many pompous prigs. Always wondered about that aspect.
If sony's are TDK's and TY's then why not just buy those?
By the way, I manually finalized and it still wouldn't work. It did the exact same thing it did on 'make cd' auto mode. The readout says finalizing, then begins the countdown from app. 2:11 minutes (2:11 being how long it takes to finalize) but instead of just completing the finalization, when it gets down to 1:54 the readout changes to 4:11 (or so) remaining, it counts down a few seconds and then stops. If I press eject the readout displays 'not finalized' and the disc won't play. Oddly however, it WILL play back on the cdrecorder itself. All the verbatim discs start finalizing at 2:11 and complete the process without a hitch. i am going to buy a TDK, Sony, fuji,.....and a few other singles and test them because I'm hoping to find a better brand then verbatim. Not that the verbatims are bad, but just that i'd imagine yeilding an even higher quality copy on a better brand.
Thanks again Rodney,

Follow Ups:
Howzit,I've owned a HHB CDR850 pro line stand alone burner for about a year and a half. I've had great luck with Mitsui and HHB CDR's (made by mitsui). At the same time inexpensive generic brands, smart & friendly, and compusa blue dyes have given me problems. I contacted HHB about this and they said that all CDR's are not equal by any means and that their quality/reflectivity can vary greatly. Thus HHB suggests using HHB cdr's. Mitsui makes HHB's so I've been using the mitsui (they cost slightly less), and have had no problems in 100's of burns.
That's not to say that your unit isn't defective, but just because it won't take certain CDR brands doesn't necessarily mean so.
FWIW, the Dave Matthews Band uses HHB's (according to a dealer I know who sells them most of their media), I figure if it's good enough for them then it's good enough for me!
Also, I haven't done research on the subject in a year, but back then the Marantz "pro" burners in the $700 price range were really "semi-pro", meaning they still had some form of scms issues, not as restrictive as the consumer models, but not as free as the true pro models. I'm not familiar with your particular model of marantz, but scms may be a complicating issue depending on what you're copying.
That said, I've been thoroughly satisfied with my HHB CDR850. It's built like a tank and based on what I read at the time, a step up from the Tascam models. The HHB also allows full manipulation of scms. When I bought my HHB it retailed for $1200 + shipping, but with some digging about I was able to buy one for about $950 including shipping from www.sonicsense.com (Denver).
You might consider a HHB if the marantz continues to give you problems. Mine has been nothing but a pleasure to use.
Good luck from Maui,
John
Hey John,Thanks so much for this detailed reply. I went back to the shop with the marantz 631 and those cdr's that it would not read (displayed opc error) as well as the kodaks, and the basf that the marantz 631 was able to burn but not finalize.
First we tried out the 'opc error discs' (the imation and the tdk) in there floor model 631 and their unit gave the same error reding. Then we put the same 2 discs in a tascam, sony, and the hhb850. all three had no trouble initializing the discs and gave no 'error' message. So that was strike one against the marantz. Then I put the unfinalized kodak in the sony and it was able to finalize it no problem.
I returned the marantz (and the dealer has now lost confidence in the marantz 631 since both his and mine suffer the same problems.)and I bought the sony cdr-W33. It's a brand new model (released in october 2000) and the kicker was that it cost $400 less then the HHB850.
I am presently burning the first cdr on it right now. I'm using a maxell blank. I'll post the results once yielded.
Thanks again for your info.

Ted
Do you know if the Sony has a memory or RAM buffer ?
I hated how both the MArantz CDR 700 and 630 would truncate the first few few frames of the first second. This is only noticable if a piece of music starts immediately, it chops off the begining of the first note.
thanks
P.S. Is the free Walkman of any good ?
Well I just had a look through the manual and it doesn't say anything about a memory buffer. However, it has seemed to me that it cuts off perhaps 15% of what the marantz cut off. The marantz seemed to lose almost the full first second whereas the sony seems to cut off very little (if anything) at all.The sony also has a digital eq for when you're recording through the analogue inputs. And it also has sony's 'super bit mapping' when recording in analogue. But you don't have to use the sbm if you don't want to.
I must say that after only a day or so; I am very happy with this product. It feels like it's built better then the marantz and actually feels more 'pro' then 'pro-sumer', which is the way the marantz felt. And most importantly, it has accepted any cdr i've tried. it also burns them without the loud whirring noise and odd pitch sound that the marantz made. This sony's very quiet.
As far as the free walkman, maybe that's a U.S. only promotion? I'm in Canada and heard nothing of it. (gee.......maybe that's why the dealer hurriedly ripped walkman headphones off his ears and threw them on the floor as soon as he spotted me walking back in there today?.....just kidding of course:-) what walkman are they giving away? tape or cd?
TedThe Marantz is meant to have a memory buffer that holds 4½ minutes in storage. "The marantz seemed to lose almost the full first second"; so that seems like a poorly executed feature.
Here in the US, they are offering a CD walkman & car adaptor kit for the first 500 units.
Is SCMS defeatable ? Can you record on to any blank disc; computer or audio CD-R ?
Can you turn off the sample rate converter & record in directly at 44.1k from CD ?
I am thinking of calling Marantz and cancelling my order, that is unless it has shipped.
Thanks Ted
I see; so we get free medicaire and you get free discmen :-))Yes it will record on any blank cdr-data or audio blank. I have used .25 cent no name spindle junk without a problem. I've used maxell, tdk, imation, kodak, and basf without any problem. All but the basf were just regular computer cdr's. Funny thing; the manual shows that it can only use 'digital audio' cdr's but there was an addendum sheet showing the same 'digital audio' logos as in the actual manual and they wrote "for consumer use" and then under it are the computer cdr logos and they've written "for professional use". So I suppose they're saying "you can only use computer cdr's if you are an audio professional......nudge nudge wink wink"
Yes you can turn off their src by turning on what they call 44.1k direct. It must be direct because the hdcd coding passes through. If the source is hdcd then your copy will be as well. I'd imagine that were I to use their src then the hdcd coding would not not come through?
In terms of scms; the word appears nowhere in the manual. I have tested for that by trying to copy a copy and it worked without a hitch. But I'm unfamiliar with the finer details of scms. I'm just assuming that since i'm using the direct digital 44.1k input then as soon as I tried to copy that way from a digital copy it would have given me an error message of some sort? Is it possible in light of what i've just told you that it is using scms anyway? I'm new to all this cdr stuff.
Sony owns Columbia records so perhaps that's why they aren't advertising the fact that this cdrecorder uses no scms?
