Follow Ups:
...who I trust told me about it:"My friend...knows the principals at MSB Technology and has
one of these devices. He did a direct comparison with a Wadia 270SE
transport into his MSB Platinum DAC and the iLink sounds superior to
him.>This makes your iPod a transport - you still need a D/A converter.
Sounds promising.

I don't think so. Toslink is awful. The balanced connection is outstanding.

Is that the very expensive modd that enables you to digital out straight to a DAC.
I seem to remember reading it was about 2k, it would want to sound real good for that kind of finance... plus I assume you could only run uncompressed files so maybe the amount of music on the pod will be limited... but only until you next sync it.
I am interested in trying a docking base for a pod... one that takes from the dock port rather than the jack, see what you can get from one of these things.... I know they are not awesome but they aren't terrible either if you get files on there right.
This is a joke, right? High performance and Ipod??? That's an oxymoron if I ever heard one. Ipod's a piece of crap and it will always sound like a piece of crap no matter what you do to it.

With a Ray Samuels Hornet amp, an AudioLineOut IC, and a pair of Shure E4c cans, and listening to Apple Lossless files, my iPod sounds sweet and detailed and full. I'm amazed that I can get sound this good from a portable rig that fits easily inside a coat pocket. And that's without digital output or an external DAC.

Which version of the iPod do you have Patriot?

a magnetic disk with a battery power supply a piece of crap??
if we could feed a dac with this , it's sure it wil sound fantastic...

The best sounding Ipod was the original shuffle. Mate it with some Koss Portapros and it is a the best bang for the buck sound there is. IF you havent heard it, dont knock it.

Mate it with Koss speakers???!!! OMG! I guess this is what happens to people who have been listening to Bose systems all their lives. It took manufacturers over twenty years to finally come out with CD players that can extract the CD's full performance without the usual grating, ear splitting, irritating, bass-less sound. Then Apple comes out with this thing that stores a lot of songs, and it's a lossless system meant to be played back through computer speakers and tinny earbuds, but who cares that the sound is reminiscent of cheap digital, it stores A LOT of songs! C'mon, people, you can't build something great when you're starting with such poor quality. Anyway, maybe by "Hi Performance Ipod Mods," you just mean how can I make it sound as good as a boombox. Afterall, that's what Bose and Apple would have you think as hi end sound.

not lossless.

I can assure you I do not own a Bose system, and am priveleged to own a very musically satisfying system. I do own an iPod, and your assessment completely contradicts my experience. Again, which version of the iPod do you own?
