Besides continuous play, general observation and listening:1. How quickly does the player "find" the disk when it is first inserted?
2. You can also see how smoothly/easily it switches from the first track to the last, back to the first, then to a middle, etc.
3. Also check if it plays a variety of different brand CDR (burned) disks easily.
These are all indicators of the laser still being in good shape and properly aligned.
Listen for transport noises. As a mechanical device it is subject to wear and tear over a period of time. The electronics itself should be similar in durability to any amp or preamp, etc.

If you don't like the sonic qualities, you can find that out quickly. No need for what you suggested. It's the transport and optics that go first and this advice is 100% on. It is 100% on for new purchases, too. Believe me, there are CDPs out there costing $2000 and more that would not pass this test to my satisfaction. What point are good sonic qualities in a CDP if it takes 20 seconds to read the first track? Inexcusable.

What is wrong with 20s to read a disc? The SCD777 takes much longer.
