The 1uf glass film caps were not enough uf for this unit so I used a 4.75uf films I had left over fro a x-over mod, then did a no-no.......I bypassed these with a .022 Vitamin Q oiler's, fired it up & crap.....There was something there I liked bigtime....listend for a bout 4hrs & even though it sounded off, motorboating kind of sound but killer tone bieng in the mix..Left on with music all night & anything that was not quite right is gone...completelly.I have never bypassed a ouput with a Vitamin Q, I avoid the practice alltogether because of bad experiences in x-overs doing this, but I have changed my mind in outputs now....I will try this more often, well worth it...........

I have always thought that Vit Q bypass caps improve the tonal balance regardless of their application. Results are consistently a smoother, more tubelike sound?
Yes,they are a tone wise very nice indeed & will be stocking up on them when I can get em..That have that something.I did how ever pull the bypass in the output on this paticular mod & settled on just the 2.2uf Auricap. I don't have any large value Vitamin Q's to try, but definatle will be looking. I here the potential of them easily. I think a person can get away with bypasses in signal path with these caps over film in most cases. it does ad sparkle to top end that is NOT edgy at least to me. I pulled them just to make sure they were not smearing the signal., Verdict is not done in my head on that yet.

Now that you bring up caps . . .Johnny's modded AH has a lot of cap changes but no OP AMP change whereas PV is doing one or two OP AMP changes only? Johnny says the OP AMP change makes maybe a 30% (?) difference and more changes are needed (such as all his changes, I suppose).
It depends what your swapping in and out....opamp wise. The opamp will set the flavour of the sound and then the caps and all rest of the components will take bits away from the sound.
As a rule of thumb use the best components you can but keep away from blackgates ...imo they are expensive and take forever to break in
the paper in oil caps I've used really open the sond up but as they are very large I've had to sqeeze them in next to the transformer , where they occupy the whole of one side.
as to the effects changes have
opamps 40%
cable 15%
caps 40%
resistors 10%
rectifiers 30%
That is a good real world ratio you posted. I pulled my Vitamin Q .022uf bypass's I had on the Auricap 2.2uf's, Now just the Auricaps & bypassed output, still about 1.4v though, plety of snap for my passive direct. I installed a Hammond 193L 5.5 lbs choke this mourning across the mains @ IEC & drilled out back & mounted on top with rubber feet. Gotta tell ya, the 193L thing is a gotta try for sure.. I won't go into details , but no negs & only + so far after 12hrs solid music. It is a crazy looking DAH-AH now, trannie is almost as big as the DAC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow .........Don't forget to damp the case .....and I added heatsinks to the dac chips to help loose excess heat.
