I'm planning to set up a dedicated headphone system using a combined DAC/headphone amp (such as the HeadRoom Desktop Amp or something similar). I have an older and presently underutilized Creek CD player (model CD43MkII) that has a coax dig output. This model uses the now discontinued Philips transport. I see no obvious reason why the Creek wouldn't work well with an external DAC, but would be interested in hearing if anyone else has had any experience or suggestions.

Follow Ups:
The CD43Mk2 is a decent transport. However, assuming the projected digital cable and I/C used are having equal value and performance, for the same money of having a DAC with built-in headphone, will it be better than using the internal DAC with a dedicated headphone amp.Paul Lam

Thanks for the follow-up. I see your point, however one of the headphone amps that I've been looking at (HeadRoom Desptop)has the option of upgrading to a very high quality internal DAC that supposedly betters the Creek's own DAC in the CD43 MkII. It may turn out to be a moot point, since if I do buy this particular headphone amp, I would have the option of using either the analog or digital signal from the CD43, and I can decide which sounds better. Including a DAC in the headphone amp would still allow me to use other digital sources (e.g.computer), even if it turns out I prefer the Creek afterall.
