I was also pleasantly surprised my new car audio system, a std Mercedes radio to which I've added a Ipod nano which was fitted by the Mercedes agent.
It is by far the best sound I ever had in a car and the fact that I can control all the necessary Ipod functions from my streering wheel controls makes it a pleasure.
The main attribute is great overall musicality and a pretty good bottom end.

The key to getting good car audio is in speaker placement. I have set my car up for good sound and tried to eliminate as many reflections as possible short of putting up sound absorption on the windows and I have a good center image and frequency response of 10-25K +/- 3db. It is not as good as a well executed home system as it is almost impossible to do this in a car but the sound is quite enjoyable.
