At the moment I only have ONE 755A. here's a pic....playing some old Buddy Guy on it while taking pics.
Why I sold my last pair, I'll never understand. So often, I kept a lot of weird useless junk and sold something I love.
I am priced out of the market like everybody else. Anybody selling a cheap brown color, late model 755A let me know.
755As are the ones...that's fo' sure. The others are good midranges but nothing special.
Don't want to be feeding our Vintage Man in Washington, Art D, second-class goods!
Check out the totally "ill advised" construction on the 618 cab. Cheap 1/2" ply, no stuffing , only a piece of mineral wool laid in on an angle.
Not the best 755 cab but sounds better then it should be perhaps.
755As are not really rare. I am sure they made tens of thousands of these things. I used to find four or five a year at least, in the pre-internet days. Good luck now with ebay making everybody an "expert."
I got this one in a Fender Vibrochamp that I paid $250 for three years ago. A totally smokin telecaster speaker but you know I plucked it out fast!
What I am working on now is getting boxes made for my 10" version 756Bs. Only way I was able to afford or find a second one of these is through the kind intervention of a friend from the Altec board. It took me 5 years to pair these up but this one IS rare.
Trust me...I have had more ghetto vintage hookups than anybody! I once tried two 755Cs for bass and a 755A for highs. Well that kinda sucked actually, but I tried it.
However, Art has been looking at some of the super classics like SPUs and whatnot and I'd have to say the A is the only 755 in that league

Joe,
Do you know the differences other than 4ohm vs 8ohm for the Altec 756A vs 756B? I use the 756A in an open beffle. I am very curious about your cabinet.
Thanks Frank
I am building a 2.5 cu.ft slant front box and i will leave space to mount a 32B horn with 802 to try a 2 way.
That is I'm trying to get a semi-local guy to build them....if not, might talk to my bud, KLOSS. He has a saw.
The Altec is not as nicely made as the WE, at lest on the surface. No handles and the steel frame *might* be a little thinner. Also uses a cloth rear vent like the 755A instead of a perforated metal type as found on the WE 756A.
Hey I don't think we should get into a heavy Altec/WE discussion here since the purpose of this forum tis to provide a venue for readers to hassle the ever-patient John Atkinson.
The point is the get the Art-Man hooked up with 755s. He might already have 3 pair in the barn for all we know! I am certain he is well aware of the existence and legendary quality of the speaker.
...more Altec Pr0n
I'm burnt on vintage gear collecting since I had more than my share back in the day, but I am very excited about giving these drivers a shot.
I get my kicks with the Silbatone Collection. My best stuff from the 80s when I was an addicted accumulator is part of this archival stash.
I figure I'll lay in a pair of 756s, a pair of 755As, one small horn system, then I'm cool. And oh yeah, I have a pr of GIP 18" field coil woofers, so I guess I'll need a complete set of drivers and horns for that too.
But, overall, I'm reasonably normal now, I swear...
Why does this interest me so? My mind must be warped, maybe its a genetic defect that makes one crave old stuff, thanks for the pic.
Who needs stereo anyway? I enjoy mono and since much of what I collects pre stereo or vintage theater. I don't feel so bad only owning 1. Cheaper to buy 1 keeps the clutter down and variety up.
