I am nearing 50 and have always loved music. The first thing I ask people is what music are you into. Most say "everything". To me this is the same as saying "I AM NOT PASSIONATE ABOUT ANY MUSIC.I AM NOT REALLY INTO MUSIC". It is sad but true. The video thing does not surprise me at all.

The only thing that will inspire a passion for music amongst the people is the musicians themselves... I think it is sad that we continue to bring up the old timers like McCartney and Clapton... U2 and the Stones... These artists/bands are not going to be around forever...Where at one time, the music drew popularity on its own, it is "popular" today only because our media says it is. The problem is if the music fails to inspire the people at large, in spite of how much our media wants us to perceive how "popular" it is, a greater number of these people will take music as a trivial entity rather than a powerful and uplifting tonic for the soul.
I also think a big part of the problem is that today's music is catering to culture, as opposed to transcending it.
