Downloaded the final - fourth - volume of Pacifica's Shostakovich cycle from Cedille Records website, with quartets 13-15 and a Schnitke's quartet.
A stylish cover that entirely fails to correspond to the private, intimate, soul searching mood of these works.
Excellent SQ in 96/24.
Mesmerising No.15 but - if memory serves me right - not as depressing as the Borodin's version. Not to be missed.
Have to listen to the rest now.
Follow Ups:
OK, at least MY 'Gold Standard' for this particular volume of work?OK, and not the last couple as these were recorded earlier. Seem to recall they recorded the series twice?
The later Borodin Quartet series that included 14 & 15 plus the Piano Quartet is hard to find here. I have never head the Borodin version of #14 or #15. :-(
Certainly the newer recording like the Pacifica is going to have the edge.
Perhaps the audiophile in me trumps the music appreciator?
That said, by any measure, one has to REALLY like the Pacifica Quartet's work here.
REALLY!!!!

I have the second Borodin cycle on Melodiya vinyl. SQ-wise probably the best chamber music recording that I have.
On a scale of 1-10 with MOG/Spotify being about a 3 and QOBUZ 16/44.1 being a 5 (actually, after a bit of listening, I'm giving QOBUZ a 6+) how would you rate the SQ of the download by comparison?

Hard to say because I have never used MOG/Spotify nor heard this recording in 16/44.1.
But with a good recording on my main system the difference between a Qobuz 16/44.1 stream and a 16/44.1 download must be a couple points on your scale. The difference between 16/44.1 and 24/96 downloads may be just a bit smaller, but still substantial.
YMMV
to QOBUZ streaming and thought that perhaps my Marantz DV-9600 in the main system was just that much better than the USB/DAC I'm using to stream QOBUZ into that same system.
And CD is only about a point better on my scale, if that.
Time to purchase a few downloads, I guess.
