eClassical are offering two of his chamber symphonies at a tempting price so I succumbed and have become intrigued at the background to this composer. There is a lot of fascinating material on the net about him (one referred to below) and I'm about to absorb some of it.
Which opens up a huge question - just how much other music is there out there we are unfamiliar with but is worthy of consideration? Looks like a (very welcome) bottomless pit!!!

Follow Ups:
.
My collection includes 19 (Yes, NINETEEN)symphonies by Weinberg (aka Vainberg), as well as a superlative Violin Concerto and a Cello Concerto and several other orchestral works. Of course, these are not all available via download in super-duper-extremo-maximo-orgasmo-rez. So, hey, not worth pursuing, eh?

"Life without music is a mistake" (Nietzsche)
For those interested, there are 5 of his symphonies at attractive download prices for hi-rez at Presto. All but one are highly praised.
I have one of the 5 of a set of his quartets by Quatuor Danel and have ordered a set of them all (less expensive than downloading the 4 missing ones) as I really like his music.
So a heap of Weinberg music to listen to ahead :-)

I would start with
Cello Concerto
Violin Concerto (Kogan, Roth or Grubert)
Clarinet Concerto
Symphonies 4 and 5 (Chandos or Kondrashin/Melodiya)
Piano Quintet
A general label recommendation for recordings is Chandos or CPO.
I just downloaded the other two chamber symphonies from Presto so will absorb them before moving on to your recommendations. The man had as many frustrations and threats as Shostakovich and was similarly lucky to escape it all alive. [And for Shostakovich haters, this music is much more amenable] It is hard to imagine how anyone could compose beautiful music under these circumstances but maybe that atmosphere inspired him.

And I just spotted the other two chamber symphonies are on offer at Presto at half price for hi-rez downloading.
Great music - highly recommended

I tried a few years ago and the music didn't do it for me - even in MCh. ;-)
At times, the music even seemed to me like (dare I say it?). . . watered-down Shostakovich. ;-)
I know several people who hate the taste of cilantro - I love it! So, if DSCH = cilantro, then, yes, Weinberg = cilantro light.
