Of all classical music genre I vote chamber works as my favourite. Apart from the music itself, recordings of quartets etc are generally better than orcherstral and this BIS release is up to their usual high standard.
Excellent album, highly recommended

Follow Ups:
Love chamber music. Especially Brahms; but anything good'll do.
One of his Prints?
What was his Medium of choice?
How did they choose that name?
eClassical are slightler less expensive to buy from than Presto if I insist on hi-rez. And that has me hesitating because I have not been able to detect any difference in AQ between hi-rez and CD quality. No question where to go with surround, but with stereo?? So I'll go with CD quality from Presto, save a few dollars, and see if any difference is detectable.

It's downloading right now (at an absurdly slow speed - but that's OK!). I'm in the same position as jdaniel in that I have the other two volumes (1+4 and 2+3) with the Eschers, both of which I like a lot (performances, music and engineering). I also have the Audite recording of the Mendelssohn complete chamber music for strings played by the Mandelring Quartet and friends - it's very good too and I find it hard to choose between the two recordings. I think I may be a bit more impressed by the music than jdaniel is - I think I posted recently that even when Mendelssohn is copying the style of the late Beethoven Quartets, he does such a great job that I can't help but be impressed.
I really enjoy the Quartets but at this point I can't think of a passage that tugs as the heartstrings as readily and disarmingly as, say, the bittersweet Sicilienne from the Haydn Op 20 Quartets, (I believe the F minor).
capturing the sound of small ensembles, if I dare say. : )
As for the music: charming and sometimes moving, but, as Wagner pointed out, it rarely touches the soul. (And as for what Wagner actually said, let's leave it at that.)
As for the performances, they're my first exposure, so I'll refrain from commenting. They sound perfectly up to the task to me.
