. . . some excellent winners in the past, such as Antonio Pompa Baldi - now a professor at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Follow Ups:
Listened to the Byeol Kim performance of Tchaikovsky First Concerto..... It was very nice as well..... She had good articulation, maybe a little "stiff," but I guess this is common for a competition..... The only real issue was I think the pianist and conductor Ling had different ideas on tempo, the orchestra itself was very "together," but not with the pianist..... There were also intonation issues with the strings and clarinet (sounded "flat") during the final movement, it got somewhat "disconcerting" at times. But overall, very nice.....
I will listen to the Aug 7 performance of the Beethoven Concerto Four with Lovre Marušić later today.
Beethoven Concerto Four with Lovre Marusic...... I thought it was a good performance, but not a great one.... Lovre had decent articulation, but I think he tried playing "soft" too much..... Although not a bad thing with this concerto, it did come off as somewhat boring for my tastes..... His hands were kind of "mealy," a la Evgeny Kissin..... I do think this is a trait with some younger pianists, he might be really good in a few years. The Severance Hall audience certainly liked it. Standing ovation.
Jahja Ling and the Orchestra put forth a solid accompaniment..... I thought this was one of oboist Frank Rosenwein's better performances (had good articulation), even though his dynamics were somewhat out of control during the opening movement, momentarily piercing through parts of Lovre's melodic lines...... Since the soloist played soft, it was not easy for any of the players to avoid inadvertently dominating the soloist..... The rest of the Orchestra had superlative discipline, in that regard.
