It's a common stereotype to say Asians, in general, are hard-working. From my experience, all "people" are--- why single out one group? It's kind of like the comment that "those (Asian) folks are quiet and respectful." Are "they," really, more so than others? It is amazing and remarkable the success Asian musicians are enjoying--- do they work harder than others, though, or is it a cultural goal, i.e. succeed in that particular field? 80% of the world's classical pianos are made in China, after all. It appears that concentration of effort has been a national goal in China for some time.
How many Chinese succeed in soccer? Not so "hard working?" And how about the relative rarity of Chinese conductors? Hmmm... not working enough?
I'm saying this after working with Latinos for over a dozen years in various organizations that serve that population, as well as a social agency and a college that had a significant African-American population. I saw no difference in work ethic among these folks and the white folks I also worked around. I also lived and worked in Brazil for years: yup, great work ethic there, too.
Follow Ups:
Uhh. . . because that one group was already the subject under discussion?
I mean, it's obvious that to attain such success, one must work very hard. Your stating the obvious is what I was curious about. It happens to coincide with a prevalent, long-standing cliché about Asians. It is interesting to consider how so many Chinese have reached these summits, in this particular field. One knows, after all, that the Chinese government has put tremendous resources behind the development of athletes in specific Olympic events so as to dominate them for propaganda purposes.
On another front, the Venezuelan "El Sistema" has produced world-class composers and musicians--- in a country a fraction of the population of China. Certainly, "hard-working" folks!
By the way, where are the major Chinese conductors? Is there a glass ceiling?

. . . often chokes on diacritical marks. That's why I don't use them myself.
I already explained why I made the comment about the Asian work ethic, but here it is again, in case you've forgotten: the Asians I know in my own experience are great examples of an impressive work ethic. (And this comment was made in the other thread, in connection with the high proportion of Asians in the forthcoming Warsaw Chopin Competition.) As to why there specifically aren't more Chinese conductors in the upper ranks (as there are instrumentalists), I can't answer that, and I won't speculate about it.
Well. . . actually, I WILL speculate about that. Perhaps there's something in the Tiger Mom upbringing that doesn't lend itself to conducting as much as to individual accomplishment in instrumental music.
OH NO! I SAID "TIGER MOM"! HOW DARE I USE THAT CLICHE ABOUT ASIANS. TIN - YOU'D BETTER ALERT THE REST OF THE FORUM THAT THE USE OF THAT TERM IS RACIST AND IS ALSO A STEREOTYPE! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? GET TO IT!!!
change is slow, bias is powerful and the quality of a conductor is arguably the most subjective of all jobs in the world of classical music.
you don't need all caps to make a point CFL, that's 'internet shouting'
in fact, they make comments appear to land somewhere between unhinged ...
and even more unhinged ... and the reason adults shouldn't shout in civil discourse
it tends to dilute the message
ADULTS SHOULDN'T SHOUT IT DILUTES THE MESSAGE! ... see?
just positing a point of etiquette for your consideration
carry on,
alrighty then, unhinged it is!
THANKS FOR CLEARING THAT UP!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
have we covered excessive use of exclamation marks before?
He wrote "Almost all the people I accompany here in the SF Bay Area are Asian - wonderful people with a strong work ethic!"
You do understand that he is speaking specifically about "Almost all the people he accompanies" do you not?
He didn't say unlike non Asians, Asians all have a strong work ethic.
Do you not see the difference?
