Two videos were uploaded, the two days of the Finals, which took place on August 6/7, 2021..... I believe the best performance was on August 6.......
Pianist Yedam Kim put forth what I thought was a superlative Rachmaninoff Concerto Three, the second performance in the August 6 video..... It was one of the best performances I've heard with this concerto in recent time...... I liked her performance a lot better than Martin Garcia's performance of the same concerto following day. I thought Garcia really struggled during the latter half of the work..... (The orchestral accompaniment seemed more laser-focused during the Kim performance.)
Long time resident conductor Jahja Ling (a real sleeper as a conductor) conducting the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall.....
The August 6 performances had the new flutist, Jessica Sindell, really impressed, she could be the best principal flute the Orchestra has had since John Rautenberg...... (Assistant principal oboist Jeff Rathbun was first oboe in this one, I like him a LOT better than the primary principal Frank Rosenwein, who performed first oboe in the other video. I also liked Lyle Steelman on trumpet and Shachar Israel on trombone.) The Orchestra as a whole sounded as good as I've heard it in a LONG time. (I like how the Orchestra performs with conductors *other* than Franz-Welser Most.)
Note that the stereo channels (on both videos) are crossed, the first violins emanate from the right channel..... (I do find this disconcerting, I just swap the channels on the headphone cables.)
Enjoy!
Follow Ups:
Joshua Smith continues as principal flutist at Severance Hall; Sindell is assistant principal. Still no appointment as concertmaster to replace the disgraced Preucil.
That competition is where I first heard Babayan (who won) and Hewitt and Primakov (they didn't win first prize).
"Joshua Smith continues as principal flutist at Severance Hall; Sindell is assistant principal. Still no appointment as concertmaster to replace the disgraced Preucil."I had my hopes up..... I think Sindell will someday be the principal...... (I talk about musicians on my favorite symphony orchestras like I talk about players on my favorite sports teams.)
What's weird is I think the strings have been playing a lot better since Preucil left....... I also like the new principal trombone player better as well.
Who knows, maybe the Cleveland Orchestra will be like the Cleveland Browns...... The Browns are supposed to have a really good team this coming season.

. . . some excellent winners in the past, such as Antonio Pompa Baldi - now a professor at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Listened to the Byeol Kim performance of Tchaikovsky First Concerto..... It was very nice as well..... She had good articulation, maybe a little "stiff," but I guess this is common for a competition..... The only real issue was I think the pianist and conductor Ling had different ideas on tempo, the orchestra itself was very "together," but not with the pianist..... There were also intonation issues with the strings and clarinet (sounded "flat") during the final movement, it got somewhat "disconcerting" at times. But overall, very nice.....
I will listen to the Aug 7 performance of the Beethoven Concerto Four with Lovre Marušić later today.
Beethoven Concerto Four with Lovre Marusic...... I thought it was a good performance, but not a great one.... Lovre had decent articulation, but I think he tried playing "soft" too much..... Although not a bad thing with this concerto, it did come off as somewhat boring for my tastes..... His hands were kind of "mealy," a la Evgeny Kissin..... I do think this is a trait with some younger pianists, he might be really good in a few years. The Severance Hall audience certainly liked it. Standing ovation.
Jahja Ling and the Orchestra put forth a solid accompaniment..... I thought this was one of oboist Frank Rosenwein's better performances (had good articulation), even though his dynamics were somewhat out of control during the opening movement, momentarily piercing through parts of Lovre's melodic lines...... Since the soloist played soft, it was not easy for any of the players to avoid inadvertently dominating the soloist..... The rest of the Orchestra had superlative discipline, in that regard.
