"Anyway, I'll repeat that it's just amazing how dominant the Asians are in the major competitions these days, and I tip my hat to them."
I've been saying this for ten years...... I believe the NHK Symphony Tokyo has been the best symphony orchestra in the world since the year 2000..... And they're still going on strong now.......
I think Seong-Jin Cho (from South Korea) may be the best pianist in the world right now......
And then there's Ayako Uehara, who I say would also be a candidate for such title, if she only expanded the repertoire..... But she might be doing that.......
Link is a recent video of Uehara with NHK..... (Half the string musicians are wearing masks.) The last two movements of Mozart Concerto 20..... One of the best final movements I've heard..... (I think the opening movement was omitted as a copyright loophole.) Note that the audio is in mono, the music begins at 1:50 of the video.......
Follow Ups:
It seemed that she'd dropped out of sight when she lost her contract with EMI.
I think she may have been through a personal crisis for a while, but now seems to be over it..... Her physical appearance seemed to have returned to how she was eight or nine years ago...... (She looked awful for a while.)
I wasn't aware of the lost contract with EMI..... Not sure what that entailed..... (I got the impression that her EMI recordings had processing applied to them..... This is one performer I'd rather hear the raw recording, with zero processing..... )
Several videos of her have popped up on YouTube in recent time, since COVID hit...... Link is excerpts, which includes Chopin's "Raindrop" Prelude.... It's unfortunate it was just an excerpt, and not the entire piece..... I once heard her play the entire "Raindrop," I've heard only one pianist play it better.... Some chap named Vladimir Horowitz....
