I think your 1972 reference would have actually been to his 1962/63 set, because he didn't record the cycle for DG again until 1975/77. If it IS the 1962/63 set you're referring to, that of course is a very famous set - I'm not sure it has ever been out of the catalog since its initial release.
Follow Ups:
YES - the recording is on side #10 of the set. The box is titled "Beethoven Bicentennial Collection" on Deutsche Grammophon. Part of a two box collection of Beethoven symphonies and overtures. Very nice recordings on vinyl that really play well on my system. I must have got the year wrong

I am a novice to classical music. Next up, Mahler's Head.
As everyone has confirmed it is the famous HvK 1962 set. However the DGG Bicentennial edition came out in 1970 not 1972. It had to as Beethoven was born in 1770 - you can do the arithmetic. I have it myself and it was my introduction to the entire cycle of the Beethoven symphonies. A life enhancing experience.
My earlier encounter with the Pastoral had been the "My Little Pony" sequence in "Fantasia" :-).

And I agree with TWB that it's a wonderful performance.

In 1968 when I was a freshman in college I took a music appreciation course and was required to attend a certain number of classical concerts. One of them was at the college and was the Beethoven 6th Symphony. I enjoyed the concert very much but I was oblivious to the identity of the orchestra or the conductor. I learned a few years ago that it was Bohm and the VPO.
